Chaps,

A trip to the 'Ring beckons in May and my E36 M3 requires re-booting.

It's on Pilot Sports presently, which are less than ideal on track owing to their inability to cope with the high temps.

Therefore, assuming it stays relatively dry I'm after something along the lines of the Toyo R888 or suchlike so I can still retain a nod to road legality (the car will still be used to nip to the shops) but have a tyre that is soley designed to blitz the track (i'll also be tracking the car for the remainder of the season)

Any suggestions as to what tyre is bestest?

P.S. I'm still using the original Wheels.

A quandry I find myself experiencing at the moment too - currently thinking of getting a second set of original alloys, and having them shod in full slicks.

Maybe some Avons or Yokohama's for pure track work and some light road work!

I hear Bridgestone Potenza RE070 are very good. I had RE050 on my M3 Evo and never had any complaints at all.
When are you 'ringing it?

We're going to the 'Ring on the 9th May, so will miss your excursion by a week or so unfortunately.

Current convoy will include an M3, M5, modified Leon Cupra and an RX8. Should be a good laugh.

The M3 really only gets used on dry days and track days so it seems pointles to compromise with an all weather tyre.

I'd really fancy a set of Pilot Cups but seemingly they are ~£800 for a set eek which puts them out of the running somewhat.

Currently swaying towards the Toyo R888 or its Avon or Yokohama equivelent.

Any thoughts on these specific tyres?

Cup's are expensive for sure but a mate that has driven the ring on many occasions in his CSL swears by these tyres, you pays your money I guess.

But are they twice the tyre of the R888 for example, when a set of the Toyo's can be had for ~£400(i.e. half the price)?

Diminishing returns I would think ( they may cost a lot more but they are more than likely only a bit better ) and ultimately no, it can't be twice the tyre and if price is to be the deciding factor, then I would say 888's for sure.

Goodyear Eagle F1's are great tyres but maybe not track orientated enough!

I've got a set of WTCC slicks waiting to go on. I'm going to put them on when the weather is better and then take road tyres as my wets and the slicks on my spare set of wheels. No idea how they'll perform but I'm excited by the prospect. I suspect that they'll make one hell of a difference!

ASBO, 888s for the M3 at £400?? if yes then well done amazing deal, but I think you'll struggle to get 'em less than £650 fitted, £630 delivered.

Worked great on my e30, a feck load cheaper in 15" tho at sub £200.

IMHO far better in the wet on track than road tyres too, except in puddles, then they are scary.

Pooky on northloop was running somat else at bedford when were all there the other week, he seemed to get on well with em can't remember what they were, Dunlop DO1J or what evr the replacement is, or the Khumo track jobbbies I think, I'll find out for ya.

I'm afraid I stand corrected - seems I was getting info off a 13 year old intertroll.

You are of course right, the cheapest I can get the Toyo's is about £650 irked

ASBO,

The Nurburgring is very very different to a track day. Your tyres won't heat up like they might continuously circling a GP track for example. My car is on Pilot Sports and did just fine on the Ring last weekend despite the ice & snow. I did a 10 mins 20 secs including tippy-toeing round some slippery corners and slowing for accidents and had no tyre issues at all. You'd have to be going round in less than 9 mins to come anywhere close to needing to change tyres so unless you're a racing driver with hundreds of laps under your belt already I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure your brakes are first class though!

I hear you Guy,

Infact, last night I was talking to a chap who had been a passenger in a car that had crshed at the 'Ring - generating track closure costs, barrier replacement costs and lost man-hours somewhere into the stratosphere.

However, I am there to have a good time and my M3 is only a weekend toy, so on that basis I've just ordered a set of four Toyo R888's for £560, which is the same price as the Pilot Sport II's biggrin

Well have a good time, 75% of the fun for me is the drive down.

Have been there and felt the pain. I still have the 'receipt' from the ring chaps as a souvenir.
The anguish has since faded...
