Hi folks,

does anyone know where theres a black E30 M3 for sale (other than the ones in the classifieds which are either post-fettle, too expensive for my want-but-cant-afford-budget or a bit molested)? Im *desperatley* looking for one, and so far the usual sources have come up with nothing (other than mobile.de which is as ever 5k over book), so if anyone knows of where theres one for sale, or of anyone who might be thinking of selling, could you let me know? Ta muchly.

Ooo, whilst your awake, anyone driven one of these recently? How do they stack up as a driving experience?

Also, if anyone knows the whereabouts of a buyers guide or just general buying tips for one of these, Id be greatly appreciative to the tune of 8 flood-damaged Twixes. or is that Twix? Twixi? oh, whatever, wet chocolate is yours if you can help me out in any way.

Ta in advance.

Driving experience?! Not done much research have you?! One of the greatest drivers cars of all time. One of the most successfuly touring race cars of all time. The road car was a direct road going version of the race car and the handling is sublime. Most would say the best handling M3 ever. Only come in left hand drive.

Trouble is, the e30 M3 is now a classic. If you find one for a bargain price (what is your budget?) then it's likely to be tatty. A good one can set you back upwards of £15k and is not likely to lose any money either.

Good luck with the search

Ive done a ton of research- however, reading about touring car wins on the internet doesnt tell me what its like to live with or how it compares to a modern vehicle.

for example, Im told that the 'grale will run rings around all modern cars ever, and on paper, based on rally wins, id be inclined to agree. however, the three ive owned have all been underpowered and less fun to drive than a well sorted modern car. thats why i wanted experience from owners or drivers, rather than readers.

I've yet to pilot one in anger, but initial impressions suggested that in a world of 900bhp hatchbacks and gazzilion bhp supercars, 200bhp is a tad lame.

Now, many will wax lyrical about how it's not all about acceleration, it's handling that counts - the Loti boys have been doing it for years wink, but at the end of the day, if you've just spunked 15k on the car of your dreams and it gets pasted by a cheeky chappy in a Corsa VXR, you're going to be a bit miffed aren't you? No? maybe that's just the boy in me.

Fabulous cars - they look the absolute nuts and the ride and handling is Swan Lake but with wheels, but I just can't get past the basic fact that nowadays, they feel well, slow.

Oh and they rust. A lot.

Well at a little over 200bhp (depending on model) they're not fast in a straight line, and would be beaten in a drag race by most of the current crop of hot hatches.

But that's not where the fun is with these cars. Point it at some corners, and it'll blow most other cars into the weeds, irrespective of age.

You won't find a cheap one, and if you do, you have to wonder why it's cheap - the prices have shot up recently, so be suspicious of anything under valued. Unless of course you're looking for a fixer-upper.

In terms of living with one, well they're 20 years old now, so you'll need to treat it as such. Suspension / bushes etc will need careful inspection, and tin worm needs to be checked for carefully and frequently.

I agree with Herr ASBO.

BUT

I still want one even though I have only ever driven one example that in honesty left me feeling disappointed.
I did however put it down to being a bit of a lemon, read: crappy aftermarket suspension/exhaust and generally ropey round the edges.
I however can not beleive that the proper sorted examples, sporting factory fresh OEM components, can not be as scintillating to drive as the press almost unaminously concurs.

It simply has to be good! biggrin

Owned mine for 2 years now! And use it nearly every day.

Mine has been fettled a bit since I bought it, I've put a carbon fibre DTM airbox and piggy back ecu running consistently 260+Bhp.

The car handles like absolute st, Even before I had the tuning done I could blow off VW R32's/Focus ST's/ and the like.... quite easily on a twisty road. I've never driven something that is so drivable on the edge! it scares me sometimes.

All in all mate, people will say oh their old, outdated by modern standards etc...but trust me get a good one and you'll NEVER look back!

I've owner a M3 Sport Evolution, 2.5 litre, one of the last 600 cars made, since December 2000, and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

No... it's not going to be the quickest thing out there, and a modified Corsa VRX may well be quicker, as per Evo's test against a 'grale, how many star did the 'grale get?
If we compare like with like then the balance will shift especially when depreciation is brought into the equation.

A properly sort one should feel tight and responsive both engine wise and handling, but dont expect to win every drag race if that's your bag.... not mine so I wouldn't know although I've been on the rear bumper of a German plated CLK 55 AMG well into three figure.

Rust is definately something to watch but name a 20 years old car that does'nt have this problem, a cherished example should be clean and drive tightly but will also be fetching the big £££.
Buy a lemon and you will be disappointed and out of pocket.

Well this is it, that car is one of the more desirable Evo II models, so attracts a premium, but a straight/honest 215bhp 1989 model should be achieveable for £10k - 15k, but the values of all cars are rising the Evo II and SE models being the most desirable.

A fairly straight SE model was recently sold to someone in Portugal for £19K
