Hi all

I went to view an E46 M3 yesterday that had the following service intervals:

Running in - 1280
Oil - 10,000
Insp I - 21,300
Oil - 35,500

Current mileage is 47,000 and the OBC says the next service is an oil service due in approx 4,000 miles. I thought that the services always went in order, ie, oil, Insp I, oil, Insp II. Is there any reason another oil service is showing as due before the Insp II? The car hasn't been driven that much over the last 2.5 years (around 11,000 miles) if this has anything to do with it.

Cheers for any help you can provide.

i think all the service intervals have something to do with how you drive the car!!!
inspection 1 has been done a bit early coz mine exactly the same car been done at 28000 miles and the prvious owner is an old man who i know never drove it hard or fast!!!
and i have a feeling you have a inspection 2 coming in about 10000 miles..

My e46 m3 had what appeared to be ridiculous service intervals, but in actual fact its controlled by fuel consumption and a time parameter. ie.The service indicator will count down over the course of either using 2275 litres of fuel or 716 days since the last re set.

Very strange...

I thought it should go:

Running in check
Oil Service
Inspection I
Oil Service
Inspection II
Oil Service
Inspection I
Oil Service
Inspection II etc. etc.

So I reckon the OBC maybe hasn't been reset properly and I expect you'd be looking at an Inspection II (about £650 or so) as the next service... If it is an AUC car I think they're supposed to complete the next service if it is within 4k miles...

The brake fluid should also be changed every 2 years.

You could get the chassis number and call BMW customer services to check on what the exact service history is and what is due next.

Yes that is the correct insp/service order.
What does the service book say? It should all be stamped up and in there what is needed next.
And the coolant is changed every 3 years.

The book indicates that an Inspection II is due next, which is what I would have expected. I have the details from BMW Customer Service as to the dealer visits to back up the service book. I will have a chat with my local dealership to check on the servicing work carried out and see if they can shed some light on why it is showing an oil service even though it seems an Insp. II is due.
