I think I am going potty, I have a 2006 M5 with 34k I purchased it 6 months ago, but have always moaned about an apparent drive "clonk" on initial take off or if in slow traffic, if I blipp the throttle in slow traffic you can feel a definate slack in the drive train almost like the rear axle is rocking. My main dealer has been great but admit they do not see many M5's to compare, they changed the rear prop coupling, but no change, I understand that the smg has bad press about sloppy changes etc, but once moving I have no concerns, on slow take off after the clonk I can have real bad clutch judder, is this connected? I live in Hertford, is there anybody localish that would be happy to meet up so that I could maybe compare with theirs so that I can once and for all to put this to bed

Mine was doing that when I sold it to a dealer... Gearbox failed shortly afterwards!

Hi John,

I have an E60 M5 on an 05 plate (27K) with what reads like exactly the same problem.

It has been in for a new clutch and position sensor but it is still not what I would call right.

There is a less than subtle thud as the drive shaft(?) appears to take up some slack.

I was going to ask my local dealer if I could try out an M5 they have to see if it was just a "feature".

There is also a familiar ring to this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-tou...

I'd be happy to meet up, I'm in Bedfordshire.

Morning Chris, Thanks for the offer but my dealer Elms of Stanstead (which incidentally have been great) have now decided to change the rear diff bushes and try this before they go the clutch/dual mass route, so I will let you know how it goes and then maybe meet up a try a swapsy drive

Hi John,

Please let me know how you get on with the bushes.

Mine's due an Oil change in a few hundred miles so I plan on asking them (Elms Bedford - very helpful too!) to take another look whilst they have it.

If the bushes really help then I'll get them to give that a try.

Thanks.

I have looked at the thread, one of the suggestions is to reset the SMG has anybody done this in the UK, I don't want to be the first to find out it is a wind up that locks the gearbox or something like that

Hi John,

If you are referring to popping into "N" and pulling back on both paddles, I have tried that. Didn't really improve things I'm afraid.

The process is documented in the manual but is related to reconfiguring the SMG after changing the tyres from memory (sorry, don't have the manual with me).

BTW, did you have any luck with Elms Stanstead and the diff fix? Mine's due in soon so any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi,

Not really related but did you buy your car from Elms? How did you find them to deal with? If so, I think my brother looked at that very car when it was at Bedford but the guy there was such a clown, he walked away. Shame as its a stunning colour combo and he really wanted it.

He eventually got a black/sepang one and loves it! He still says what a great looking car the Imola M5 is though.

Pork, It may well have been the car that your brother saw at Bedford as there are not many about in Imola, I have to say that the attention the car gets still makes me smile (normally from ear to ear) especialy if I have just polished it and am having a bit of a jolly in it, just to clear the cobwebs you understand. I am constantly being reminded how much my car has dropped in value, but I try to get them to realise lifes pleasures very rarely come cheap!! I hope your brother is as happy with his car as I am with mine.

Black or Blue are both greeat colours for M5 or M6. The only two colours I could go for... then get the car wetsanded as per the Keltec thread.

Hi John,

My M5 is in for an oil service tomorrow. Do you have any feedback on the effectiveness of the "diff bushes" change?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris, I thought it had made a difference, I'm sure it does not shudder so much on take off, but I have definately got some slack still in the drive to the point that when I select reverse and touch the throttle there is no response for a second...scary!! but not all the time, hope this helps mate, maybe when you have yours back we will make the time to meet up.

Is that just not the SMG engaging? I get it in my E46 - select a gear, and there is always a slight delay in the engaement, which I always thought was basically until the biting point was reached.

Hi John,

Took the M5 in this morning, unfortunately it was on its best behaviour!

I mentioned they should have a chat with Elms Stanstead.

I wonder if your delay relates to the calibration of the clutch position sensor? I have had that replaced (along with a new clutch) so if they do replace my diff bushes/oil let's see if that resolves our problem.

Will post back!

Cheers,
Chris

Hi John,

Had to wait for a filter so they kept the car in overnight. Fortunately that gave Elms the chance to try the car cold. True to form the thud reappeared.

They put the car through some diagnostics which suggested they remove the gearbox and check sensors, etc. Last time it was in they replaced the clutch and position sensor so we'll see. I have to book it back in for 2-3 days at some point.

They changed the diff oil so we'll see if that improves things in the meantime.

Will keep you posted!

Cheers,
Chris
