Hi Guys,

Can you all go out and buy the ones in the PH classifieds to stop me from doing the same. They are becoming MIGHTY tempting.

Would I be mad to sell my elise to buy one? Would I? Would it make me... naughty?

I feel like I've had a couple too many pints and the big breasted local bike is sat at the bar giving me looks.

That is all. smile

Looking at your profile was probably the worst thing to do.

I promised myself a e39 in 1999. I'd only be letting myself down if I don't. Right?

When I see a e39M5 on the road now, I definitely look at it with the same sort of wonder that I would an e30m3. OK the e39 is slightly dated, but they are still seriously good looking cars (esp in silverstone and black).

I think I may well put my elise up for sale at a fair price and see what happens...... 'ye gods will have to make the ultimate call then smile

Buy one! I went from an s2 Elise to an E39 M5 a few years ago. Managed to do a walshy day in it and have as much fun as in the elise (just with 3 other people in tow instead of one). DO IT!

If I didnt have a silly rule about not re-buying an old car, I'd buy another E39 M5 myself!

Take your time, loads of good cars out there and you will be a very happy man. The biggest differences you will notice include weight, tyre bills, developing a relationship with a good local specialist (NOT A MAIN DEALER) and excessive urges to push the pedal deep into the carpet.

Wonderful cars, amazing engines all wrapped up in a non aggressive and well made body. The Elle Macpherson of cars maybe!!

I recently moved from a Honda S2000 to an e39 M5 and don't regret it one bit!

OK, so I might miss the roof down moments on a sunny day, but my god the power is addictive. Plus its a stunning looking car, yet very discrete at the same time.

As others have said, make sure that you look around and find the best one that you can afford. And leave plenty of money for fuel and tyres, too!

Best car ...ever!

Went from 993 - CSL - Modded Cooper s over a short period and recently bought an E39 M5. I can honestly say it is by far the most fun and beautifully made. It is so stealthy and offers much more detailed feedback than a CSL.

Go for well looked after car and you won't regret it.

As said above, take your time.
Evidence of a well serviced car with reciepts to prove is more important than low mileage or spec.
They are heavy cars and with the amount of torque available take their toll on tyres and suspension bushes, so regular wheel alignment required also.
Never owned a LotsOfTroubleUsuallySerious but you will need a sense of humour to run an M5

Soz have to disagree with that.

Had mine just over 3 years (02 plate), clocked up almost 100,000 in it and apart from servicing and tyres it hasn't cost me a bean (well, not too many!) Rear tyres (Dunlops) are good for 15k, fronts are doing over 30k+, never had the tracking done, done all those miles on one clutch (previous owner(s) had screwed the original). One thing I do get through is brake pads, oh and a bit of fuel (20mpg average) and now its starting to use a bit of oil (litre/3-5k miles).

Faultless motor, and still good for 150+. Will cruise all day well into triple figures and eats cross country A roads for breakfast. A rally car it ain't, but for an agile mile muncher it'd take a helluva car to beat it.

Well I had a blast on the Walshy day in the elise, so I've given it a little bit of a stay of execution. It really was rather fun and I'd like to go again, I dont think the consumables cost of taking a m5 there bears thinking about...

I only get 30mpg out of my elise as it is, 20 in a m5 would be fine.

Look at this though, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/727339.htm - rediculous.

Facelift, relatively low mileage for a m5, satnav. M5s under the 10K mark just tempt so much.

One of the main considerations of a M5 is that I love my SQ car audio. The elise is errrr, well not terribly well suited to car audio shall we say. A M5 would be a great place to install a system, nice and comfy to chill/cruise on the motorway, but find a b-road, lower the windows and let the beast come out to play.

In fact, at the walshy day I went on last week there was a westfield. I can't help but e39M5 and a westy/caterham would be just about the ultimate partnership. I don't see me keeping an elise long long term, but a M5 most possibly.

Still, it's a nice 'problem' to have deciding what to do biggrin

Oh, and given my rears lasted about 8K on my M3, I can't see me getting 15K out of the M5. I don't do much motorway work, its mainly a b-road commute I have to do / a dash through the Milton Keynes roundabout derby biggrin

That does look a very low priced M5 for the milage.
With regard to audio, if the M5 has the DSP system then it is quite good. Mine has the hi fi system that isnt. I beleive that installing ICE into the M5 isnt that easy bearing in mind the amount of wiring looms for the TV, sat nav, voice control etc that need to be tampered with.

Ah, it's depressing to see how much they've depreciated in the last year though. They're now ludicrously cheap for what you're actually getting.

I paid pretty much double what they're up for now.

Saying that, it could always be worse. I could have bought an E60 M5 or an M6 wink

I'd have said that's around the right price, Shirley.

They start at < £7k now for a real dog, so close to £10k for the first of the facelift cars seems right.
