E60 M5 real world 0-60 time
Discussion
To be honest the E60 M5 isnt the best 0-60 weapon. Its lack of low down torque will give it cause to struggle for power until it gets past the 4k rev point. Where it does best is in the 100mph and beyond range where its amazingly efficient drive system comes into its own. Dont get me wrong, the E60 M5 will still shred tyres off the line, but only with the right settings. Save yourself any embarrasment when racing hatches off the lights and stick to nailing ferraris on the motorway. Just my 2p.
If your after a 0-60 car then Evo's / GTR's are the way ahead.

Evening Eddie!
You pissed again? Sure sounds like it!!
The M5 pisses all over hot hatches in any conditions....full stop.
Evos/Scoobs/GTRs piss over the M5 0-60 (usually).....go any faster and the M5 leaves the Scoobs and Evos.....GTR is more challenging, but will ultimately fall behing the beast.
I drive my M5 only at the weekends.....it keeps me going through a stressful week....roll on tomorrow!

Race a focus rs off the line without launch control and see who's quicker. Race an astra vxr and see how close they stay to 50/60mph. From there the //M will blow them away, and all others who fancy a whipping.
Thanks guys - not really interested in racing away from the lights - if I was I have another car to use anyway. It's just that there are occassions when you might want to put your foot down and it does seem hard to get off the line.
Feels like around 6 seconds to 60 in my view - just wondered what others think?

RS6's are fantastic 0-60 weapons. The gearboxed dont agree but it is a 2 tonne barge after all. With 550lbft and 508bhp it was nocking on 4.0s to 60 with normal conditions and 3.9s on a very good day. I do miss the torque. But the RS6 is slow above 100.
But how often do you get the chance to take it over 100?? One of the failings of the M5 (with the standard exhaust) is that it only really sounds right when approaching this sort of speed! Jazzer said:

Having owned an E60 M5 (fettled by DMS) a few years back & now owning a GT-R, i struggle to accept "GTR is more challenging, but will ultimately fall behing the beast". With a stock GT-R managing 0-60 of 3.5, 0-100 of 8 & a top speed of 193MPH, at which point will the GT-R fall behind the M5?You pissed again? Sure sounds like it!!

The M5 is a fantastic Autobahn cruiser & it can surprise many a more focussed car on track, but drag races it isn't great at in all but the mpst perfect of road/weather conditions.

A good number of GT-R owners have seen 200MPH+ as many cars actually output a good chunk more than the Mfctrs quoted power outputs.
Have spotted a couple of M5 200MPH runs on youTube, but all seem to be in very HIGHLY tuned M5's, not seen any stock cars hitting the double ton.
The M5 is a very fast car, but very different in it's DNA make-up to the GT-R which was designed to be all about performance & less about refinement. They're very different cars.

Autocar did in 2009. The times were 4.8 to 60 with LC and 10.2 to 100.
The quarter mile was 13.2 secs.
I would imagine the 0-60 is in the same reigion as the E36 M3 and E39 M5, this being a little over 5 secs.
Traction off the line being the biggest hindrance.
I did a 0-100 on milbrook proving grounds but spun out, putting the launch control function on cooldown, forcing me to do it manually with TC off in m mode. got 9.4 (sorry this was in M6)The quarter mile was 13.2 secs.

I have used the LC on my M5 a fair few times and tbh it never felt quite right and I think with TC off and in manual it will easily do the quoted 4.6 0-60 in real world conditions.
I would not feel intimidated by any hot hatch off the line, and don't understand why they are even mentioned as being in the same class 0-60. A scooby or Evo, or a carrera 4s would definitely make me feel at a disadvantage though.
I also made a video of M5's launch control in the wet on youtube, but can't link it from here cause the site is blocked and it definitely looks like sub 5 seconds.
So is it me getting some lucky spots of traction in both the M5 and the M6 or is every other person on this thread talking bks with above 5 seconds estimates?
