Why doesn't a CSL get dyno tested?

Because the computers pick up that the front wheels are not turning and cuts the revs as it thinks you are stuck and may damage the engine by over reving it, my M6 went on the rollers and would not rev past 6k but it still managed 478bhp and every warning light possible came on, it really confuses the car.

Because they either limit themselves to 6k rpm as they know they are not moving, or if you do some dodgyness with abs sensors they seem to run in emmissions mode.

I would have the CSL for the boot and seats! It would be the drivers skill that determines the fastest car!

Just watch out for the CSL's cardboard boot floor, don't put too much in!

No, the boot floor is made from compressed cardboard for weight saving on the CSL.
Big things fit well, especially with the rear seats down but heavy things are a no-go.

Yours carried ten cases of wine home from France last year. They didn't fall through the boot floor!

That boot floor is metal. The cardboard myth was spread by Clarkson and relates to the floor covering. In the normal M3, there is a cardboard sheet with a carpet on top. In the CSL, they are incorporated together to save weight. Underneath is the usual metal floor.

Then the official data BMW give out is 'horsecrap'.
As is the advice on luggage loads the dealer gave me when i bought the car.

There is a lot on this thread I disagree with. Apart from the main point about a CSL being as quick if not quicker than a 996tt (which is simply not true) the part about the rolling road made me chukcle.

Something about picking up the fronts wheels and thinking you are stuck? What on earth are people talking about? How do you think you test any rear wheel drive car?

Also why not just pop on a Dyno (with the rear wheels off) attached directly to the hub at somewhere like Abbey Motorsport? I've heard some rubbish on Forums but unless i'm missing something this sounds hilarious??!!

Back on the topic of this tread, on track at somewhere like Bedford a CSL will do a max 140-145mph (if you are very lucky)down the back straight. The Porker will hit 150-155mph easily if you have the balls to brake that late.

Not denying that a breathed on CSL will be a bit quicker than standard but 25bhp increase is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

I agree that my CSL is not as quick as a 996 turbo, nor has it any right to be.

Face it, why would a 3246cc naturally aspirated engine propel a car of similar weight to the Porsche quicker, when it is so far down on power?
3600cc and twin turbos, 420/450 bhp versus 360 bhp and much more torque would surely see the still-brilliant CSL flagging?
As far dyno testing, i also find it strange thast this car cannot be tested yet many of my other rwd cars were.

Look in your boot. I've looked in mine and it's funny looking cardboard.

overall, I agree with you, but Horst von Saurma of Sport Auto took the CSL round the Ring faster than the 996TT. Now the CSL was developed with a strong focus on being quick at the Ring, so that means little on other tracks or on the road.

One thing about PH though is you always know that whenever there is a debate about an M BMW, it will attract hordes of people to put it down, in case the upstart is seen to challenge the establishment. BY the same token, there will be a solid core of M car fans to defend their homour.

Yeah a good bloke...but I still reckon the flywheel figures are high from that road. Same as Emerald...Its all about comparisons done before / after work anyway so not really that important. I took my car to three places in 4 days and got a variance of 30bhp..I believe the Abbey Motorsport one that is done without the rear wheels the most. Been there 3 times and its very very accurate IMO.
