The E30 M3 was awarded top laurels because it was so easy to obtain the maximum from, but it would have been easy to mark it down for it's weak engine, restrictive gear change and less than exotic feel.
For the cubic capacity, the engine output surely is more than respectable and I am not sure the weak engine description is appropriate.

I agree the gear change takes getting used to, and I have heard many tales of inadvertently changing from 4th to 3rd instead of 5th.

Less than exotic feel? So which BMW model would you consider exotic then?
By todays output standards, the engine is weak.
Anything 20 years old when compared to todays standards is going to be weak it's like comparing a commodore 64 and a playstation 3.

Poppycock.
The article is based on comparison ..... regardless of age.

Perhaps not the best choice of words, but the E30 M3 uses a 4-cylinder engine and it shows when compared with the 6, 8 and 10 cylinder newer family members. During the same time period (when E30 M3 was produced) I owned a Porsche 968 CS and whilst that was another lovely car, I could never get away from the fact that it would have sounded much better with a 6 cylinder lump.

By 'weak' I was referring to the sense that you have to rev the E30 M3 hard to achieve decent performance, and overall it doesn't have the smoothest of engines to do so (certainly not as painless as a VTEC Honda for example).

Again, not surprising given the 20 years that have passed, but the E30 M3 does not impress purely on one-aspect of its performance, it's how these all come together to create the overall driving experience that makes it a winner.
