Hi All,

I have my Dads old S12 silvia in the garage that hasnt moved for 6 years and want to get her back on the road.
The car is original par the exhaust and how it left the factory untouched with 18k on the clock.
My question is whats the best way to start her and get her back on the road without causing damage?
All belts are original and oil last changed in 2000 due to lack of use.

Can anyone recommend a spares supplier for this Silvia or anyone that could do the belt for me? (Nissan want £600!!!)

Cheers

any independent mechanic should be able to replace the cam belt along with idlers tensioners water pump and ancillary belts cheaper than a dealer.oil air and particularly the fuel filter will need to be replaced and the fuel tank drained. it's goin to beware labour of love after sitting for so long. I'm currently doing the same with my evo as it sat for a few years. it drove fine for a while but eventually the head gasket gave way due to corrosion. brake calipers and wheel bearings are doing the same. your s12 is probably only going to gain value as they are getting fairly rare. I'd imagine it has huge sentimental value to you. with basic mechanical knowledge and tools you could carry out a lot of the work required yourself. any pictures of it

Thanks for your reply.
Ill try and dig some out but they will be from back in the day or JAE.
The garage is big enough to work in but not take photo's.
The other issue will be the clutch plates used to stick even when used, so I am worried about this.
Think we used to just start her in gear and hold the brake on.

Its a good looking car for its day and retro is everything today as no interesting cars being made today.

Ive not managed to find any photos yet but thought I'd pick you're brains as youve done some recommissioning:

Can you advise the best starting/preperation process to illiminate chance of damage ect..?
Im wary of just starting her after reading too much on the net. Ive started other cars that have stood for 5 years and never thought twice.

drain the fuel tank first and new filter. remove the top timing belt cover and make sure the belt isn't cracked or frayed and check the tension grab the belt between your index finger and thumb pull it up and down it should move no more than the width of your thumb.next remove the spark plugs and get a ratchet and socket on the centre bolt of the crankshaft pulley turn it clock wise a few rotations if it moves freely with no catches or clinks fit new spark plugs, check the oil level. either disconnect to coil packs or plug leads and turn it over via ignition switch until the oil light goes out. connect everything back up and try it again if it runs at all second switch it off and give it a full service, engine and cooling system flush and
