I know I've missed the boat as you've already bought one :-)

.. but I think the only advice that I can think of that I would give to a would be mx5 owner would be to go for the 1.8 instead of the 1.6. Although all the general wisdom suggests that the 1.6 [when it was 115Bhp] is a better car and a sweeter engine - if you are going to modify the car - then the 1.8 has stronger bits [diff/clutch etc] and you can get more power when you turbo it without changing the bits.

probably only important if you are going to mod it... but worth a mention!

Nope. 1.6 is the sweet one if it's a mk1. Also cheaper to slap a turbo on it, which everyone should (£1500 for 170bhp fitted). Though ultimately you're right, the 1.8 can be taken further, but at a cost where you should have bought something else in the first place.

Best upgrade I did on mine (aside from a turbo) was to fit 1.8 front brakes. Easy job. All you need are new carriers, discs and pads. Carbotech Panther+ are the nuts for track use and work on the road too.

www.mx5ocforum.co.uk is where you want to read up. www.performance5.co.uk and www.mx5parts.co.uk for parts, help and tuning.

Here's how much fun you can have in a standard 1.6 :

Whilsy MX5's are fun to drive they are very girly cars. I dont like the new one at all - it reminds me of the Gibbs aquada.

That's right. Look at my girly car:

Compared to this very masculine looking S2000:

I thought PH was for people who were older and more mature than this.

Sorry to upset you - I do like the MX5, it wont ever shake the image of a girls car though - thats not just my opinion, but the general opinion (other than MX5 owners obviously). Sticking some other alloys on doesn't disguise the fact its still a girls car.

Wicked Video - which wheels are they on your car? I'm on the lookout for some white alloys for mine - which is also mariner blue

They're magnesium wheels from Wedsport. Rocking horse poo, so if you find a set buy them. Light wheels really make a difference. Even another set of 15" aluminium wheels were noticibly different.

rolleyes I think most of us are secure enough in our own sexuality that it's not a problem. I certainly don't feel the need to check between my legs periodically laugh

I'd hate to choose my cars based on what other people think!

Go ahead and enjoy your S2k and I'll carry on enjoying thrashing the nuts of my 2k girl's car thanks!

Kevin,

Can you drop the crap about the MX5 being a 'girls' car. It's frankly getting quite tiring now.

We've all heard you - thank you. Perhaps it might be best if you popped over the jap forum, where you can bask in the masculinity of the choice of vehicle you drive.

no thought not , same concept

the mx5 i have has no power steering no electric windows or no nything , its a basic 2 seater roadster in the same guise as many 60s-70's roadsters i enjoy the car and dont care about the image.

It was a hairdressers/girls car for the most part. As it got towards a better price performance ratio, enthusiasts adopted it.

Look at the recipe for the 1.6:
- 7,600 rpm
- front engined, rear drive
- double wishbone suspension all round
- 950kgs
- 50:50 weight distribution

It's not super quick. But it is the perfect training car for anyone who's been brought up on a diet of front wheel drive and fancies moving to a porsche, tvr etc.

To anyone who knows anything about what makes a drivers car good, those are impressive stats. Can't get much better than that for 2 or 3 grand.

Idiot. Think there's more MX5's out there on track day duties than S2000's. And it would seem a lot more imaginatively tuned ones too.

Yep. The mx5 is a lot less tricky on the limit than an s2000 too.
