IF you change your speakers in your 5 which have 16cm standard and 13cm on the MSSS systems get rid of the stock grilles
if your doors look like this ..

they will have the speaker partily firing into the door card causing loads of vibrations in the door card etc
rip them out so you get the full benefits of the speakers

You will notice a difference OH yes

Hi Mate,

Is this the same for MX5's and Eunos?

Thinking about upgrading the speakers in Amy's ride.... any recommendations on speakers?

Hi Phill ,
they are the same 16cm upfront ,
only difference you have is you dont have to remove the whole door card , just the grille which is held on by poppers ,
dynamat the area behinf the speaker and the area the speaker sits and amp them with a good quality 2 channel amp ,
the grilles do similar to what ive done cut the original out and fit the grilles that come with your speaker to that panel .

Excellent cheers mate.

I'll probably do without the amp and just get the speakers.

We're doing Secret Santa for presents for the family this year and my Sister is buying for Amy (doh not so secret). Speakers seem like a practical present!!

I still need to get some new HT leads and front pads installed but i've come home tonight to find her new leather handbrake and gear gaitor has arrived so i'll be fitting those this weekend (along with fixing the leaky kitchen tap and washing both the cars!!)

Don't bother spending too much money on speakers - they will never sound great however much you spend. An MX-5 just isn't a good environment for speakers.
An amp helps if only to boost the bass which is otherwise drowned out at anything above inner city driving speeds.

I have some £50 2-way separates and a 20 year old 2X25w amp and that's about as good as you'll get in a '5 without spending silly money (which will still sound crap at speed).
