Really quick question but does decatting a mark 1, 1.6 mx-5 increase the exhaust note?? Friend has just picked up a lovely type s mx-5, which already has pipercross filter and dual tip sports exhaust (which sounds lovely and deep), but he wants to know if removing the cat will spoil the noise at all, maybe make it sound better? or just chav loud

Hi,i put a magnex decat on to my 1.6 auto about a month ago
and i am really impressed with it.
Its a bit louder,at low rpm and then its as it was before.

I think its made pick up a little bit more responsive.

One of my mates has a 1.8 with (I think) an MX5parts twin-exit exhaust. With a straight decat pipe it was very, very loud. A silenced decat pipe made it a lot more bearable.

Do you know me?! hehe

I have the exact configuration as above and its great for hooning as the exhaust note is VERY loud indeed. However I must admit to considering getting a cat refitted to it as its quite boom-y drone-y at 3-4k rpm - bordering on the chavvy.

I have a Mx5 parts single exit exhaust, and got tired of the de-cat very rapidly. Plus I was worried that it wouldn't pass the noise test for Bedford so I replaced the Cat. Exactly the same problem, too boomy and resonant at 3-4k revs.

I'm sure I've seen a cat-bypass with a baffle/resonator in place of the cat. That should sort out the loud/boomyness.

Got the MX5 parts item on mine after the cat started to heat up (replaced O2 sensor at same time in case).

Yes, it is more raspy - sounds like an old Triumph Spitfire or MG Midget with it on, so it'll not be up to everyone's taste for long journeys. For me though, puts a big smile on my face every time I drive it to or from the 17 miles to work. Half of that is on B roads though!

Mate has finally beaten the weather and fitted the de-cat pipe and all i can say is holy shit its loud!!!! rumbles low down the revs, then just screams at the top end with loads and loads of pops and bangs on the over-run. Sounds awesome now but might be tiring on a long m-way run.......
