Not a pop at you - most people who call MX-5s gay drive the most mundane pieces of ste you can imagine! wink

Just thought: 1 more positive of the MX-5 is reliability of course, 1 more negative is fuel consumption!

I love TVR S's but above my budget when I bought my '5. Not sure about the reliability or everyday useability either, and have heard too many horror stories about chassis rust eek

Not sure that MX-5's are overrated - EVO Magazine sure liked mine when they tested in in April 2005...

I don't think it looks particularly "girly" or "hairdressery" either...

I dont think MX5's are overrated. It's rare to find an MX5 driver who think's the car is perfect.

For me my MK1's faults are:
1. Soft top, I'd prefer it as a coupe.
2. MPG is a bit poor really.
3. Standard suspention allows a LOT of body roll.
4. Could be more interesting to look at.
5. a few more ponies under the bonnet would be nice

But the positives are:
1. Reliability
2. Great fun to drive
3. Because I find the engine a bit weak under 4000rpm it's perfect for allowing SWMBO to drive to and from work
4. Plenty of bolt on performance bits if I want them
5. relatively cheap to buy.

i think, for once, the mazda is a car that lives up to the hype..it does exactly what it says on the tin..its cheap..(mine was £900)...quick(ish)..and feels quicker with the top down....its good looking, tho familairity may breed contempt here....i find mine averages around 30mpg which i think is ok...and the handling is sooo accessible...mx5 is a cheap untheatning fun car that suffers from an unfortunate image which helps keep prices down so those with a more open mind can enjoy them......

...i bought mine thinking, yes, quick polish, fresh mot and il get £1800 for this...then buy something i really want!!...but its got to me and i find myself thinking of selling some of my other toys instead.....

Another thing here is that many people equate handling with grip. The fact that the average hot hatch is not only quicker but can also out-grip an MX-5 means that it's quite possible for it to be quicker down a twisty b-road but "handling" is so much more than this. Being able to feel what each tyre is doing, knowing exactly how much grip is available, getting signals through the steering wheel and SOP to tell you when you are approaching the limits. I'm pretty sure my Focus 1.8 Zetec has more grip than my MX-5 but it gives me nowhere near as much confidence that I can actually use the available grip.

I'm part of a group of 8 that between us have bought a Mk1 1.6 to use as a track car. The car cost us £750. We've given it a good servicing, replacing all the fluids, belts & filters and still have change from £850. We took it to Woodbridge Airfield last weekend and while it was one of the slowest cars there on the straights it was at least the equal of everything else on the twisties and did more track time than any other car there.

I'm not trying to compare it to much more expensive machinery but for the money they are bloody good cars.
