Popped in to see Tony at WIM this morning to try and diagnose a knocking from the right rear. Looks like we've got a faulty shot which is causing the bounce and vague feeling from the rear end.

While I was there Tony's guys got me a price for 2 replacement shocks and we shocked by the cost and it was recommended that I look at getting a set of replacement shocks/springs from someone like Gaz as the original springs will have done 170k+ miles.

So whats the recommendations? The P5 kit looks quite promising...

P5 (protech) have far happier customers than the GAZ kit, Tony yesterday was saying how amazing the P5 kit is and that the cars with it fitted alway have better caster than non P5 kitted cars.

I've been having a look round and i've come up with the following options:

Option 1:

Replace both rear shocks with standard items.
Approx £60 p/corner + say an hours labour + full alignment

Cost = £296

Option 2:
KYB AGX Shocks with Flyin Miata springs
Shocks & springs £429.00 + Two hours fitting + full alignment

Cost = £680

Option 3:
P5 PureDrive (i assume this includes shocks & springs) £485 + Two hours fitting + full alignment

Cost = £736

Option 4:
P5 PureDrive (i assume this includes shocks & springs) £485 + Mk2 top mounts + Two hours fitting + full alignment

Cost = £836

Add in £45 Polyurethane Bump Stops with Boots...

Yikes! This could get very expensive!

I had the p5 pure drive and mk2 top mounts and i'm sure I didn't pay more than £500, the bump stops and boots were inclusive in the price.

had 12 month old AGX& eibach on the car when I changed and the ride is in another league.

I have a 1990 Mk1 1.6 and I can't justify the expense of buying brand new performance parts. Apart from service items every part i've bought has been second hand.

These shocks include the MK2 top mounts and brand new springs

These would have been a good deal, but they've just sold

I bought a second hand set of KYB/AGX Shocks with FM Springs and MK2 top mounts for £200 and they're perfect compared to what was there before.

To add to the above, WIM will fine tune your settings for free if you have already forked out his initial fee for the alignment, so you can discount this cost.

MX5mad will swap your suspension over for £100, but I don't know how far they are to you as they are based in Romford, Essex.

Good luck

Interesting post... cheers for that. It's a difficult one as you rightly point out the car isn't getting any younger so is it worth spending 50% of the value of the car on getting it tip top. I'm heading that way as we plan to keep it for a number of years.

I didn't have the alignment done in the end as I knew it would have to go back to have new shocks/springs installed and then the alignment.

Ok we know have the time and the money to revisit this...

I think we'll probably go for:
KYB Sports Handling kit - £335.00
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...

Along with 4x
Shock Absorber Boots - £11.75
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...

Anything else I should do while everything is in bits?

The car will then go to WIM for a full set up.
