I'm used to the aircon making funny noises, but this was new. It was over on the LH side of he engine bay (looking from the front) and there was coolant all over that area (presumably the system was overpressureised and it pissed out of the overflow.

The questions is: why? I topped up the header tank tonight (rad was still full) and ran it up to temp with no ill effects, but it was very hot yesterday. Slightly strangely the fan didn't come on though scratchchin. Surely it should have after 10-15 minutes idling? I did the fan test (TEN->GND in the diag. plug & press the gas) and they worked. I wonder if I could have a duff thermostat?

I have ordered a new rad cap (genuine mazda part).

I'll go through a few diagnostic things tomorrow... Any more ideas?
idling it doesn't warm the engine up the same as running it - you need far less fuel burnt (and so less heat produced) so get the engine to tick over than to accelerate a 1000kg car. i'm not surprised the fan didn't come on after 10 minutes idling.

OK.

Replaced rad cap and HT leads at the same time. The old cap was very gummed up (header tank and cap all look reddy brown - I hope it's not rust from cretinous previous owners filling with water frown We shall see.

Tried to check the timing but there are several marks on the crank pulley rolleyes although one seemed to be around the 12-14 BTDC mark. Will look into it later.

Went for a blast, came up to temp quickly (so the thermostat is not jammed open at least). Didn't go over half way up. Couldn't hear any pinking, there is a noise when labouring in a high gear but not sure what it is.

Got back, fan was on thumbup, coolant level still fine, nothing pissing out in the engine compartment.

So, hopefully, that is fixed - I wonder if the rad cap had gone bad and failed at high pressure, pissing coolant out of the overflow. Not pressurised = coolant over 100 deg = boiling?

I will keep an eye on it - I at least know that the fan is working, I will check what temp it kicks in at tomorrow. So, if the fan is working and it's not leaking then it should all be tickety boo! Thermostat could still be dodgy so maybe I will look into changing it - a guy on mx5oc blew a head gasket thanks to a thermostat failure. Think I'm probably OK though - heats up quickly so it's starting closed, and as the car isn't overheating it must be opening to let the water flow through the rad...

that thermostat looked a bit ronnied ,

BTW the timing mark you need is the second notch of the 2 on the crank pulley
