Mk2.5 Gear Gaiter & centre console removal

For anyone who might have done this themselves, could someone give me some advice.
I have managed to get the centre console off the 5 screw points but cant shift the leather gaiter from around the gearstick. Removed the knob but it appears that the leather gaitor hole just wont fit over the threaded stick. Am I doing something wrong? I need to change the rubber boots top and bottom and cant do anything until I can shift the bit of leather!
Also, I have the 6 speed box, do I still have to fill the turret with gear oil or not?

That's odd. I've done this on mine and didn't have any trouble at all. The threaded section isn't any bigger than the shaft below it is it?
One thought... did the gear-knob come off cleanly or has it left a boss on the gear-stick?
As for the gearbox oil - no, the 6-speed doesn't need separate turret oil like the 5-speed does. It is a good idea to put some light grease on the nylon boss though.

hmmm, well im not sure if there still is a boss on there actually. I did swap the gearknob from the factory leather one to the factory alloy one but i didnt think that either had a boss on there. It definitely wont come off though, so ill have to see if there is a boss over it and try and prise that off. Could be easier said than done though
Have you checked the lower one? I wouldn't be surprised if that one is torn too, it would be unusual if the top boot was damaged but the bottom one was fine. Even on my 7 year old car the bottom one was torn.
It makes a fair difference to the quality of the gear-change and also keeps the turret oil in and clean.
