Hello,

I'm buying a small car part (a wiper motor cover) from a forum member in the US. Unfortunately shipping is proving very expensive. I've got too used to eBay global shipping and rockauto prices!

The guy has packaged it up and the package is (13 x 11 x 9) inches or so and weighs about 4lb. The cheapest shipping I can find is First Class International through USPS at $50, although the seller's preferred option is Priority international (which is tracked) at $63.

Annoyingly, a similar part (although not the right one) can be shipped through eBay global shipping at about £16.

I've been really struggling to find this part so I kinda need to get it bought, but can anyone suggest cheaper shipping before I go ahead and pay (and get further gouged by HMRC and the Post Office charges when it arrives....) ?

Many thanks for any help!

Have you tried getting quotes via interparcel.co.uk ? Sometimes they can be surprisingly cheap.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately the cheapest from Ohio to the UK was £80!

I have to admit I did wonder about that. However I don't know how much is involved to do that, or what's required to set up global shipping, plus how does he guarantee that he sells it to me?! This guy's been really helpful and I don't want to mess him around, or risk losing out on a rare part.

I live in the US and that $50 sounds about right for a parcel like that to the U.K. I don’t think you’ll find anything cheaper. FedEx? UPS, DHL?
I have family in the U.K. and Oz and shipping gifts gets expensive.
I have to buy parts for my British cars from the U.K. and that gets pricey too, especially with the exchange rates at the moment. Sorry I can’t offer any better suggestions.
Sometimes you just have to suck it up and pay.

If you're not in a hurry then try Ron Fenton @ STS Imports, he has a container roughly once a month.

$50 is a bargain for package of that size/weight
