Sorry to hear about the 'nicked' wallet whilst in London - I was 'mugged' for my watch a couple of years ago in Ladbroke Grove. I say mugged - more of a very clever 'distraction' theft really. Kinda did me a favour in one respect - watch was 30 yeaes old and worn every day doing everything, car work, gardening, DIY. Insurance covered OK. Same day there were two other similar robberies in nthe same area.........one victim was stabbed for his watch. have to consider myself very lucky I guess.
It has to be a major worry about keeping cars irrespective of value or condition away from your own house. One hears so much of similar stories of s, kids and other 'vermin' doing this kind of thing. Even worse is the risk of them trashing whatever is in there just for the hell of it. It would also worry me about having a vehicle in a 'secure' storage facility (thinking about that thread with the torched Ferrari's and other exotica). As has been said the toe rags now know what is in there which unfortunately is a big worry.
Yep.
15 years ago, I had my garage broken into where I was living in West London. It was a lockup, but belonged to the flats, and was behind them, so could see the roof of the block from my maisonette but not the door, as faced other way. Me and the missus went away for a weekend to East Anglia, and when we got back on the Monday after noon, one of the neighbours came out as we were parking up, and said that half of the 30 odd garages had been broken into during the previous night, and they knew I had my Ducati stored in there. Walked around to the block to see about 10 doors busted open, including mine, and all my tools had gone (including all my late Grandfathers old tools from his toolmaking days in the 1930's) and my Ducati Monster 750 was gone, plus the bike stand and other items. Most people didn't keep anything in the garages, but the ones that did have stuff in that they nicked, they decided to graffiti tag those busted doors just to rub it in, or display their handywork to others..........furiousshoot

That was back in 2004, and when I finally moved away from the area 2 years ago, it was a much worse area!!

Cheers Rosco (likewise rat rod and and others), it's left a really nasty taste in the mouth and caused a few problems this morning, but the new bank card has just arrived so life goes on. I get the definitely feeling that 'criminal life' has also returned to normal wit ha vengeance since the lockdown eased, with more people about it's far easier for the vermin to circulate and do what they do. As regards classic cars in storage, yesterday one of the Mini forums I'm on had a post about a shed being set upon that contained four Minis, all of them have had every piece of glass smashed. For a while I did consider putting my next car in storage if it turned out to a yank land yacht but I won't be going down that route now, the constant worry would spoil the whole experience.

On a brighter note, the forecast for the economy is a good one, I'm on annual leave now for a couple of weeks, time to crack on with the garage and try and get out to look at some cars wink

After seeing those photo's of the storage unit burnt down with all those stunning cars destroyed has played on my

mind and was all ready talking about selling off some cars, but yesterday made my mind up , i've got two already advertised but come to the conclusion

that i only need one classic toy and a cheap daily due to where i live,

With very few of us going abroad this year the roads around here will be gridlocked what with the beaches and New Forest plus the

M27 is on it's 3rd year of roadworks along with the A27 through to Porsmouth then leading onto the Chichester bypass which is always

at a standstill so.easier to jump in the old Lexus with petrol in it and all my bits and just go than get something else out of the shed,

In this case i'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

And that's the crux of it now that old Landy values have gone ballistic since they stopped making the Defender, and LR Classic have started charging 6 figure sums to restore old Series 1 Landies.
Looking at that one, it was probably a £30k+ example in todays mad market.

Apologies to Land Rover 'enthusiasts' - but WTF - 'why' - such a agricultural vehicle. There are so many alternatives out there to them - OK the alternatives perhaps won't last as well but I can imagine a lifetime spend using one of those on a daily basis must do your body harm. A buddy of mine came in to a bit of money and after running an early one for a number of year bought a brand new SWB diesel 2 seater Land Rover (before they stopped making them). It went one one of those places that 'customise' them - so, a set of fancy wheels and chunky tyres 'sic' and some blingy bits inside, including a fancy steering wheel and leather cover bucket seats. I'm 5' 9", he was 5' 11". I sat in it with the drivers seat all the way back and my knees still brushed sharp bits under the dashboard - the driving position was so bad. How people can use them on a daily basis defeats me.

I've had fun with them at work on site back in the early 80's, although the brand new swb diesel we got delivered to site to use was painfull. It don't even think it was a turbo diesel back in 1981, and it had a speed or rev limiter fitted, and it was comical driving down the A30 flat out at 52mph.....

Mate of mine used to do serious off-roading in the 80's with lots of shorty Mk1 RR's, that have all now died. He still owns an ex-Army LR Lightweight that has was stuck in his back yard for about 15 years, and which having now moved out to Wiltshire, he spent a few months of lockdown furlough time last year getting it back up and running, and now uses it for getting around the local farms he does pest control rat, and bunny bashing etc on.

Better not be leaving your Challenger down there then,

Looks a lovely paint job ,what a waste, almost to clean for a Landy,

That will be half way to Nigeria by now,

When i moved out of town i thought i might blend in a little better so i bought a swb ,it made the Rods feel like a Phantom.

against my better judgement i sold it to a guy in the village ,we got talking and would save a advert, Lucky for me apart from

small items it's been as good as gold.

Thinking it may have been me ,i bought a second one , another swb but a roadster ,great fun with the windscreen down,

Apart from that i hated that as well, it's in New York now ,delivered it to Southampton Docks for the buyer and he had another

15 down there all over 25 years old so they could be imported without any problems,

With what aeropolot says on the values today sounds like we should bring them back home.

How did the shooting go, being out of practice hope you didn't shoot anyone,

That's got me thinking ,no chance of borrowing your gun ,just in case my visitors come back shoot

Someone somewhere will eventually buy it, but it won't be me .nono

Yeah overall i was quite pleased i managed to get round without issue, so my mobility is improving ,
laugh we smoked a few!

Yeah apologies for mentioning the Landy, it was a interesting resto, lots of panels to make, bulkhead took a fair time to complete , Chassis wasnt that great really, had to do the normal rust areas,

Promise i wont mention it again!

As for a Challenger TA, or a Cuda AAR, yes please, serious cash Stateside, Unless i win the lottery my bucket car will alas remain a pipe dream laugh
But just as the 2 above cars would be priced around $70-80 K around the same as a 70 Ram Air TA, which sort of = 60K here,
In reality none of them would be any quicker, ride any better, turn any more heads, than my RT, and 95% of the public would'nt be able to tell the Mopars apart!

As stated before, even if my RT returned me 35K i'd still be 25grand short, nah its never going to happen, for one real reason, whatever market forces dictate , to me the TA just aint a 60K car, just like a wobbley 390GT aint a 80K, car, ...........................................................
This is real world stuff, however a huge lottery win and id have one of each laugh

That's why, if I wasn't doing the '32, I'd go for a clone of something rather than the real thing, as I wouldn't be scared of using it (or even loosing it if that happened) like you would with an original example.

Something like this Fairlane Thunderbolt 'tribute' car.....$40k instead of $400k....!

Absolutely, for mere mortals, make's perfect sense, i do really believe the whole numbers matching, one of 20 stuff, and all the other nonsense that surrounds these car these days is total boll---,

I remember looking at a Road Runner 6 Pac clone , parked next to a A12 Dodge 6 Pac car, the dodge was a genuine factory car, condition both restored to a decent level, the Plymouth was 22K the Dodge 65K .................... go figure, only the bean counting anorak's would have been able to tell laugh

The whole 'numbers matching' / 'oldest known survivor of' malarkey is getting tiresome on the whole, although genuine articles do appear occasionally. A prime example of the bullsh*t brigade is a white and black Mk1 Cooper S which the seller bungs on ebay at regular intervals with the guff 'oldest known S in existence' when it quite simply isn't, it often shows up with a c.£100k price tag attached, this moves up and down by about £20k with each subsequent listing, disappears for a few months then reappears at the £100k mark, repeat ad nausium etc etc. (The oldest surviving S is one of two surf blue and white cars which were both Longbridge press vehicles back in '63 with consecutive Birmingham reg' numbers). The vendor of this bullsh*t also flogs Rolex watches, bless him.

As if I don't have enough distractions already, a '90s Maser Ghibli II I had my eye on last year has just reappeared on ebay, a few grand outside my current budget....! spin
