After years of wanting I'm in a position where I could realistically buy and run a Yank. I'm currently leaning towards a Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck, but there's so many other nice cars I could easily be tempted by. There's always the trade-off of buying a car that's already here vs a personal import. With companies able to carry out the transportation, light conversion and approval for a fee, the only benefit of buying a car that's already here seems to be the ability to inspect it (correct me if I'm wrong).

Looking at American car sales sites, there is obviously a lot more choice than the yank cars for sale here... stating the obvious I know... but without taking a holiday to go and buy a car it's entirely possible I could end up buying a dog that only becomes apparent once it's off the boat.

Has anyone used a service to inspect prospective vehicles to check the condition of a vehicle overseas, and then made a purchase based on that inspection? Any pitfalls?
