I'd never buy an RS as long as there was a Z28 available. But I don't like that anyway and concealed headlamps aren't going to be making a comeback for cost reasons (and possibly legal ones too - LOL). Still, it's nice to see the car capturing the imagination.

I wonder if the aftermarket suppliers may offer something though scratchchin

Still, the original's plenty good looking enough as it is.

So, what was the hierachy? RS, SS, Z28?

It's complicated as they were "option packs" originally so you bought your car with the engine you wanted and added an SS pack which gave you uprated suspension and an RS pack which gave you the covered headlamps so you could have an RS SS. Z28 was top of the tree as this was the "competition package" for racing with a huge carb set-up. The 2nd gen built on these option packs and added a luxury Berlinetta cashing in on Ferrari badges.

By the 3rd gen, they were more designated models as they cut production back. The 3rd gen was base, RS, Z28 with Z28 becoming IROC for a few years before reverting to Z28 when Chevy lost the right to use the IROC badge.

By the 4th gen, it was even more straightforward with V6, Z28 then SS but they still had options more akin to the sort of thing you get in modern cars and certainly less evocative.
