Hi 300bhp/ton, surprised you haven't given up on this forum after the grief you've had on that "American cars - why the haters?" thread smile. The other automatics I've had that I thought kicked down more readily were a 1971 Camaro Z28/RS, a 1972 318ci Charger and (currently) a 1995 BMW 525i. However, both of the yanks had mechanical kickdowns which were easy to adjust, so I tweaked them to respond how I liked. As I've said above, though, the last few times I've driven the car it's behaved as expected...sometimes a little slow to kickdown, but nothing out of the ordinary. Regarding the gearing, I came across a nice RPO decoder elsewhere on the net and so now have a list of all the options my car came with..one of them was 2.73:1 gear ratio.

By the way do you guys have the keyless entry option? Mine doesn't...it's a case of actually having to put my key into the lock and turning it...long time since I had to do that smile. Strangely using the key in one door doesn't open the other door either, as central locking would. But the capability is surely there as there is a power lock switch inside that electrically operates both door locks....odd me thinks confused

It's amazing how much attention the car gets...I'm quite liking it. Plus, I've also sensed a certain respect element too with some other drivers. I've definitely noticed that more people give way me to me at junctions/roundabouts when I'm driving the Camaro than when I'm in the beemer or VW....and they don't seem to do it begrudgingly either!

Yeah you do get respect from some other drivers - its nice. smile Don't get that in my Honda Civic... biggrin Had a van driver give me the thumbs up at a traffic lights the other week and people generally do stare at it a bit.

Keyless entry - no mine hasn't remote locking either. But as you say, it does have power locks. I think the Yank specialist I get mine serviced at said it was possible to get it remotely locked and alarmed - he gave me a guy's phone number which I never followed up (lack of funds at the mo).

My Z28 had an aftermarket Sigma alarm that used to flash the indicators but that eventually packed up. Can't recall whether that was separate from the remote locking though. On the Mustang, one click of the remote unlocks the driver's door and you have to click twice to do the passenger door also. You may have to unlock the car "twice" to unlock the passenger door. How quickly we forget these things!

Then again, everything for these cars is available on-line. Here's the manual:
http://www.camarohighway.com/Manuals/1999camaro.pd...

Your car may not have remote entry or the key may have lost it's synchronicity:
To resynchronize the transmitter with the receiver stand
close to your vehicle and press and hold the LOCK and
UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter at the same time
for about eight seconds. The door locks should cycle and
the parking lamps should flash to confirm
synchronization. If this does not happen, you may need
to replace the battery in your transmitter or match the
transmitter to your vehicle.

Cool link that - my manual is very different. Funny, the buttons on the power seats are TOTALLY different design in that manual - they look really naff and clunky compared to mine.

Have a look at your VIN number. It decodes thus:
2 = Canada (where they're built)
G = GM
1 = Chevrolet
FP = F-body Camaro
2 = doors
2 = manual belts, driver and passenger airbags
G = LS1 engine
X = check digit
W = 1998 model year (so 99 will be X etc)
2 = St Therese plant
6 digit number = production number.

Some 98's will inevitably have been registered later. Some Euro-Vettes were from earlier model years - they just used up the supply.

Mine's a euro model - and did indeed come with the 12 cd autochanger. A doddle to use but you do forget what you loaded in there...silly The head unit (a radio/tape unit) is different to the US market one with the same knobs but in a different layout.

I was told American FM radios aren't entirely compatible with over here but there are ways of converting them as said already. Probably better getting a US one - more chance of getting spares if you need them. Mine has the main on/off volume knob missing - chances of getting a replacement seem to be virtually zero. Just as well it works without (it has a long spindle). smile
Mr Flip Martian, despite the fact that you thought the chances of you getting a replacement on/off volume knob were virtually zero, I have one for you here smile

I was so fed up with my Japanese Radio 2 only stereo that I bought a US Monsoon on Ebay. I've now fitted it and it works well, so I can send you the knob from the original unit. Just email me your address (and name, unless you want it addressed to Flip Martian!) and I'll stick it in the post to you.
