Hot Caddy CTS Diesel on the Way

Powerful diesel unit could join the CTS range



It's no secret that our chums across the pond like big V8s to produce an obscene number of horses and loud noises. But Cadillac could be about to take that familiar formula and apply to oil-burning.

According to reports, GM’s 4.5-litre Duratec V8 diesel could be heading for the well-received CTS to create a performance diesel. The unit pushes out a respectable 310bhp – 16bhp less than Audi’s 4.2TDi (which isn’t offered in the A6, the CTS’ main rival, which makes do with a 3.0-litre) and 28bhp more than a BMW 535d. The torque is the bigger surprise – 520lb ft - which again is much more than BMW’s efforts.

Cadillac is clearly serious about making a sporty diesel too, suggesting that the car could gain a slightly detuned version of the CTS-V’s suspension and handling set-up. And if the rest of the range is anything to go by the car should be competitively priced too.

I really like these, was reading Clarksons article about the charged V8 one in the Sunday Times, seems like a good car aswell as looking good. They should be fairly sucessful with the diesel.

More power than a 35d? That must be nearly as fast as a 35d but not a remapped one of course!

Sorry to sound all non petrol head like but what about the economy? it needs to be more efficient than the petrol to be worth considering

With the high gearing ratios on the CTS petrol, I'm getting daily driving figures of 27 mpg from a new, tight engine and over 30 mpg on longer runs.
CAFE considerations in the home market mean that the CTS 3.6 can do 144 in 4th, 150 in 5th and 6th.
A high output diesel can only do better or else there would be no point in introducing one.

Good point morgrp, a lot of these diesels consumptions are getting rather close to petrols.

if anyone else was having problems googling this engine for more info, it's actually a Duramax, not a Duratec as stated in the article.

Sounds like a very interesting engine, clean sheet design aimed at being light and compact, fitting into anywhere that a small block V8 will fit and reducing the clatter and noise of a typical diesel. 310bhp is apparently the minimum expected power figure as well.

Who writes these reports? Why is it a surprise that a GM 4.5 V8 diesel produces more torque than a 3.0 BMW one?

Eh? BMW don't do a 3.5 liter diesel.

The x35d is a 3.0 ...

Yeah, I thought the 335 petrol and diesel so called due to it being twin turb'd rather than a reference to capacity. i'd stake my reputation on it being a 3.0in the beemer.

exactly - with some of the derv powered beemers (5 series mainly) I've found that if driven spiritedly the consumption is really isn't that much better than the petrol equivilent - I guess tax will be marginally cheaper but its worth working out if its worth the trade off - Ahhh hell I'm just trying to justify getting a dirty great big petrol V8!!!!biggrin

As is the want of the Americans we can have all there worst cars such as PT Cruiser and the death trap that is the Voyager in RHD but as soon as they make a good one they import it in LHD, no wonder their car industry is failing!
There already bringing it into the country in RHD in the basic models why can't the hot one be converted?

Isn't anything 'Duratec' a Ford engine?

Would be a bit of a surprise to see a Ford unit turn up in a GM car....

Aren't Duratecs petrol engines, and Duratorques diesels...bah, who writes this stuff, moan moan moan etc etc.

Nice car indeed !

Just a pity we have to put up with all the bloody import tax,vat,sva and a million other cost's added before it gets here.

Like I said in another post, The Pontiac G8 GT + Corvette engine costs £14.800 new on the road in NC - USA, and the dealer
