I've been investigating what the speed limits are for my pick up truck and thought this might be useful for some of you who own american pickups...

For sometime I've had a niggling feeling that my truck may be restricted to the same speed limits as those for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes i.e. 70,60,50, but as it is a pickup, could it fall under the dual purpose category that most European pickups fall into?

A trawl of the internet, discussion on Speed Plod and Law didn't really clear things up so I made a call to VOSA who themselves were not entirely sure. The clincher was the fact that it was over 2040 kgs unladen as this is the weight limit for it to be classed as dual purpose and this takes prescedent over other factors such as 4X4 or 2 rows of seats etc.

So for any body with an pickup over 2040kg unladen these are you speed limits:

Motorway 70
Dual carriageway 60
Single carriageway 50

I'll leave it for you to decide if you stick to them.......biggrin

Another dependant factor would be the taxation class ie; Private or LGV
or dependant if the truck is company owned or private use owner.
Private use and not goods carrying - normal speed limits.
LGV (Light Goods) then different limits would apply.

It's one of those ... Grey Areas

Taxation class may possibly affect the speed limits but who owns it and what you do with it makes no difference according to VOSA and I pointed out in my Convo with them that I'm a private owner, although the truck is classed as LGV.

Unless your using it for work ie hauling goods
It's PLG
Get on to the DVLA and get it changed.

My 7.5 tonner is registerd as a "Special Vehicle" £165 RFL
Only used to cary special equipment, generator & HP pump.
All fitted inside box.

I had similiar discussion with Police & Traffic Commisioners (VOSA) re both my HGV's & F150 trucks The F150 was classed as SUV and not used for work so as normal private vehicle.
Was stopped for a little over the speed limit a long time ago and no issue.
Like I say "Grey Area" so I don't worry about it.
