Absolutely love the textured dial on this and some others in the presage range. Never been the biggest fan of power reserve indicators though. If it was a GMT hand rather than power reserve I believe I'd be struggling to not buy one.
I know what you mean. Yes the dial totally pops, looks better in the flash. I am not a fan of the power reserve either, but I don't mind this one too. It was my first Presage, before I went mad and bought other Presage, incl GS, so it holds a place in my heart.

Delighted with my £114 mechanical SNXS79K from Amazon. It's a 37mm case; 39mm would make it perfect. Pictured with its Snowflake big brother where it doesn't look second-best at all. Really incredible value.

Seiko 'Red' Alpinist SCVF005. Fittingly for this forum, purchased in 1999 during my first visit to Tokyo Auto Salon!

I wore this daily till 2004 when I gave it to my nephew. He wore it for a few more years before being stuck in a draw and forgotten.

He found it recently and knowing I turned into a WIS, asked if I wanted it back as it was just gathering dust.

I had forgetten how good looking the watch is and amazingly after 20years stil works!

Looking forward to getting it service and a new crystal fitted. Servicing hopefully is a strip down and lube, as parts are no longer available from Seiko for the 4S15 movement. Found someone to do the service and hopefully he can find a new crystal of the size required but the cyclops is going to be the issue.

Still debating whether to get it polished or not... The case definitely has lost its sheen and would look better for it. I think at the minimum, I would like to get the bezel polished up and sparkling again, so at least when I look at the dial, everything looks mint.

Absolutely love these Alpinist models and am seriously tempted by one, along with a Grand Seiko in due course. Congratulations on this and fingers crossed the service is straight forward.

Not strictly a Seiko, but a reproduction Seikosha Tensoku Kamikaze watch.

An early 60s Goldfeather has just landed from Japan. A 2.95mm thick movement means its pretty slender! They even went to the trouble of bending the long hands to match the dome of the crystal.

I thought I'd share about the slightly strange buying experience for this one in case anyone else is into odd vintage Seikos! I've bought another watch through ebay from Japan and that was a fairly straightforward sale. With quite a few of the GoldFeather listings, there were 3 different auctions all listing the same pictures and all at different Buy Now prices which seemed fishy enough that I was discounting them. But all of these sellers all had great records with shipping lots of items and I couldn't find anything else decent! I did a "search by image" on the pictures on the cheapest listing and found them on a Japanese language only pawn shop site. So I'm pretty sure what's happening is people in Japan are scraping from Japan only sites and shipping from there. So I just went with the cheapest - it took a few days to ship but shipped quickly from there. I guess the alternative would be to use Buyee.jp or similar if it's a yahoo auction.

Hope it's of use to someone!

That's a very helpful post, thank you. I love that watch and am very tempted to seek one out.

You're welcome! Forgot to say you'll pay VAT and maybe an admin fee depending on the shipper on import. Japanese will flat out say "no" to not declaring the correct value too.

There's a few other deceased sub-brands from the same time besides the GoldFeather that don't seem to get much recognition either. Check out the Champion, Liner, SkyLiner and Crown for 60s manual wind dress watches.

I started off with thanks too, but now I'm cursing him. I'm lost in a maze of Oriental web sites and arcane watches. I'm confused, undoubtedly poorer, and clearing my browsing history with all the alacrity of a teenage boy hearing his mum's footsteps on the stairs. I mentioned Goldfeather to a colleague and he thought I was asking about condoms. The shame ...

Having had my first Seiko in, IIRC, 1963, I have had so many over the years. I am rather ashamed to admit that I bought the dawn grey turtle last year, love the colour, but I've never bothered to have the strap adjusted and wear it. Must get arse in gear!

Today I had new crystal fitted in the Seiko 66-9990 with stainless case. Now have a nice matching pair from 1962 and 63. Next time Mrs Spydaman and I go out we'll wear them and see if anyone notices. They won't. The stainless one belonged to my Mother-in-law's partner and the goldy one was a birthday present from Mrs S. Both of them look nicer in real life than in pics.

One of my Dad's old Seikos which I've had sitting in a drawer for two and a half years, it's nothing special but I like it, the serial number on the back says V743-9020, does anyone know how old it might be...? It's still working, just needs a new glass cover and a few links taking out of the strap so I can start wearing it. Back in the '70s and '80s he would treat himself to a new watch once a year or so, always Seikos, for a while he kept them all in a drawer but this is the only one left....
