Working up the watch ladder
Discussion
Afternoon gents,
Looking to upgrade my Tag Monaco to a Breguet XXI with the aim to re-upgrade every year or so to eventually land a ROO on the wrist. I was wondering, as this is probably a path well trodden, if there was a resource listing the best watches to buy in order to flip in the medium term available somewhere?

Just put the money aside and keep wearing the Monaco, until you've the funds (with or without its sale) to land a nice pre-owned ROO.
You'll lose more money in the interim doing it as planned, and as much as Rolex is the default answer in that case, it's not as rosy as it has been in recent years – so like I said, save your money for the big one, you might even get there sooner.

Sounds like very pragmatic reasoning, however I might go for a middle of the road route and buy the XXI as I'm really fond of it and save on from there, with maybe one more in-between watch to keep me motivated. You'll lose more money in the interim doing it as planned, and as much as Rolex is the default answer in that case, it's not as rosy as it has been in recent years – so like I said, save your money for the big one, you might even get there sooner.

are you suggesting buying and then selling at a profit, as a way of working your way up?Looking to upgrade my Tag Monaco to a Breguet XXI with the aim to re-upgrade every year or so to eventually land a ROO on the wrist. I'd agree with the earlier posts, just save some money each month and buy the Royal Oak when you can afford it.
You MIGHT get lucky and make some money on some deals, but otherwise you're just delaying the process, spending money and then losing some on a sale.
Also, the assumption here is that a more expensive watch is a 'better' watch, that's far too subjective to be true.
Technically you may find some of the more expensive watches are more advanced, but equally a lot house fairly simple (and sometimes cheap!) movements, and the 'best' watch is the one you ENJOY the most, even if it's a £100 G-Shock!!!!!

+1. Well put P.S. I come from the watch industry (ex. Swatch Group) so I, more than anyone would know that Price ≠ Quality

I was trying to say just do the saving and make the jump all the way and miss out a load of dearer watches you don't REALLY want...

good advise.....unless you intend to buy pre-owned and try to make a profit from each move up (which is not easy) then save your pennies until you can afford the ROO You'll lose more money in the interim doing it as planned, and as much as Rolex is the default answer in that case, it's not as rosy as it has been in recent years – so like I said, save your money for the big one, you might even get there sooner.

For the less refined amongst us WTF is a ROO?
2 pages worth of thread and nobody seems to have done the courteous thing of decoding the ROO thing. Gives me an idea for the "things that annoy you beyond reason" thread.

Probably quicker than posting...

Funny enough I had, but one of the first replies was about a Rolex, so having guessed that it must be some Rolex edition, rather than the AP Royal Oak offshore, i decided to post. In spite of your snide comment, I thank you for clarification over steer said:

That being said I've done the same thing as you although not intentionally. I wanted a DD for ever but always assumed I'd never afford one. A chance convo with a dealer and it dawned on me I wasn't far off my grail if I was happy to sacrifice a couple pieces.

I had a ROO Chrono but had to sell it to free up some funds for other things, it's an amazing watch, best bracelet I've ever had on a watch and the rubber strap was pretty good too. If I were you OP, I'd probably just whack the money away each month until you can buy it outright - I didn't lose anything when I sold mine which I had originally bought 2nd hand.
