A tad off thread perhaps, but the post earlier in the thread made me unsure whether to laugh or cry, and I don’t mean laugh as someone’s misfortune.
A guy said that he thought he may have been robbed getting out of a taxi in Barcelona, as he used them frequently, and (in his opinion), the drivers were in on it.
The driver would stop, then struggle with change, and other passenger(s), would try to get in, presumably as our hero was waiting to get out.
I’m guessing that he thought that this was when he was robbed, or pick pocketed.
Nice, blame the cab driver because you haven’t got the moxie to tell the jerk getting in to wait.
Now I can’t speak for Barcelona’s finest, driving their black and yellow cabs, but a), when I was in that game in London, if I dropped a job, and another job rushed to my n/s door and asked if I’d be available, I’d say, “Sure, as soon as they’ve paid and got out, just get in”. and if I was a passenger opening the door to get out, and someone was trying to get in at the same time, I’d say, “Take it easy pal, one at a time, okay?”

Not sure if that would work to be honest.

You could TRY, but you'd be better with "feu-ho ben! Un per un"

The Spanish police stole our hire car in Alicante a few years ago and charged us 163 euros to get it back.

Nice bit of Catalan selmahoose, but I don’t think that, nor soup dragon’s Spanish would have been much good for me, I was talking about being a passenger in London, getting dropped at Tower Bridge Rd., or Kingsway, not in Barcelona, asking for Passeig de Gràcia, or Plaça de Catalyuna.

I’ve only been to Barcelona maybe three times, and I used taxis to get around most of the time, with the occasional trip on the Metro.
I never once had a bad experience, maybe because after I’d stumbled through “Hola! Como Estas?”, I’d eventually slip in, “Soy taxista en Londres.”
Probably on the basis of never mug a mugger, I was shown a little deference.
Once, in Stockholm, my friend who was living there, told our taxi driver, an Iranian immigrant, that I was a London Black Cab driver, the driver proclaimed, in English, “I am not worthy to have you as a passenger.”
I knew we were good, but I think that was a tad OTT.

went to Barce a few weeks ago and wore an old nixon. Something very dodgy is being sold on Las Ramblas all the way up. They watch out for people watching and clocked me....felt quite nervous with my 15 yr old daughter.
Also saw locals fighting with migrant tat sellers right down by the harbour shopping centre whilst many tourists were trying to circumnavigate the frakkas.
I've been 4 times now - I think that'll be my last. I love the place but its getting rough as a dogs nadgers.

I've been 4 times too. Problems on every visit. No need to return there, plenty of nicer and safer places to visit.

Better off wearing a £10 casio. Why draw attention to yourself with a fake watch that they don't know is fake?

Whilst lying in a pool of his own blood, a dazed BadCompany smiled wryly to himself. He had fought back hard, but hadn't suspected there to be a third guy behind him with a knife. True he had lost the fight catastrophically but deep down he knew that he had got one up on the muggers and that made him feel proud. He managed a grin as his eyes closed for the last time.

Which leads to another question.

I also have a genuine gold Rolex day/date. If confronted do I hand it over? I know that would be the sensible advice but . . . .

You'll be fine they're unlikely to want one of those, they scream 'fake' from a mile off. laugh

I'd be punching them in the chops hopefully before they can draw a knife.
