A bit like cars I would take 2 at £10k and one at £30k , over one at £50k
I'd struggle to get anywhere near the £50k budget, I would probably be much happier with x4 £10k watches, a couple of G-Shocks and a load of custom straps/clasps etc.Line up would probably look something like this:-

As long as it gives me the time with reasonable accuracy I don't really care. I've never seen the point of spending thousands on a watch that (a) hardly anybody else will see and (b) makes you look like a complete ____ when you have to explain to someone why your watch cost more than a decent car.
Never fails does it. Someone puts up an interesting thread and then someone who clearly doesn't have any understanding of the topic or the context makes a bitter little comment. Zero positive contribution but types away anyway. Well done to everyone else for ignoring the troll and enjoying the thought process, wish I could, but will going forward!

I'd probably spend it on multiple watches, but given it could only be one I'd say a Laurent Ferrier Galet micro rotor or Galet square.
that is very tasteful, especially as you've blown £50k on a watch that looks like it cost £100(no doubt the interior complications are made from royal blood, unicorn horn and Kim Kardashian's hymen)

Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller Globe - easiest to use Travel Time watch I have seen, superlative micro-rotor movement, finished off with a cloissone enamel dial easily a rival to the Patek 5131
Or a Lanhe and Sohne Richard Lange Pour le Merite - a time only watch with a fusee chain movement and three-piece enamel dial (this is out of budget but they have just released a black dial version (NOT enamel) which is but I think the enamel dial does make the piece).

I stand corrected, although no wiser as to why that cost £50k. Not knocking your choice by the way V12Vee, someone here actually likes that leopard print Rolex
GALET MICRO-ROTOR
Representing a subtle blend of traditions and contemporary techniques, the Galet Micro-Rotor features an understated dial concealing a concentrated blend of horological innovations.
Its calibre that is automatically wound by means of an off-centred micro-rotor, stems from an exclusive development inspired by the “natural” escapement invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet. This new double direct-impulse escapement fitted directly on the balance is equipped with a silicon lever. This modern construction, combined with the use of cutting-edge materials, maximises energy efficiency, which in turn ensures high amplitude for the balance and reduces the mechanical force required to wind the mainspring.
The harmonious construction and the technical performances of the Galet Micro-Rotor are part of a global approach envisaged for each of the movement parts, aimed at optimising energy management – the ultimate goal being to improve user friendliness by more efficient automatic winding of the movement.

I guess different people appreciate different things
I think I'd find it hard to justify spending a lot of cash on anything that I did not see a difference in value in, but then if I was really into watches I might have a different viewpoint as I'd see the difference in value

I'm a watch person, but I very much believe that high-end watches are like high-end hi-fi. The law of diminishing returns very much applies and the point comes where the engineering does not improve, just the cost of the materials used goes up.sealtt said:

It is a great watch. I was lucky enough to visit the Laurent Ferrier atelier last year and meet the man himself (as you probably know he spent many years at Patek, which is about 200m from his workshop, and raced at Le Mans coming in third, so he is all good with me macky17 said:
I agree the 'makes you look like...' element of the post was unnecessary but I totally empathise with the first half: will someone explain the expensive watch thing to me? I imagine I feel about watches the way my family feel about my car obsession: confused. Is it the look of them? The precision mechanics? I just don't get it. I'd have to be a multimillionaire to spend more than a few hundred on one there are so many things I'd rather blow cash on.
Don't even try to understand Why does someone spend £5000 for their family to spend two weeks getting burnt on a lilo? Pointless!
Why do some people have a wall full of diecast model cars, collected over the years and must have cost them hundreds if not a thousand, only to make the room look like a child's bedroom? Nincompoops!
Why were some people paying hundreds of pounds for new £5 notes with an "AA" in the serial number? Madness! Even crazier than stamp collectors.
Why did I spend a few thousand on a 35 year old car, just to use on summer weekends when it's not raining? What sort of twerp throws his hard earned around like that!
Why go to a Michelin starred restaurant when you can get 80% of the flavour at 10% of the cost from a chain restaurant? Don't get me started on the cost of the wine/whisky/vodka when Tesco's own brand would do.
Why buy that expensive vintage cabinet or oil painting when you can get something from Ikea? Who are you trying to impress?
I could go on!
