That's a California dial, isn't it?

They make my teeth feel funny.

There's so much to love about the Deep Blue, especially if you appreciate the technology in it (I do).

But it's the ring lock compression ring that puts me off somewhat, I understand why it's there and I know it's absolutely intrinsic to what the watch is-but it just makes the dial look too small to my taste.

Fantastic bit of kit however.

I know exactly what you mean - I ummed and erred for ages. In the end my appreciation for the engineering and for what it could do (I don't even dive!) and the fact that you see less of them than say a Submariner, swayed me.

Romans count like this:

  1. I
  2. II
  3. III
  4. IV
One of the rules of thumb is not to repeat a character more than 3 times. So 8 is VIII and 9 is IV. Same goes on every level. Thirty is XXX fourty is XL (L is 50).
So, in short, IIII is no number. It doesn't exist in Roman numerals.
Might as well have a dial that says: I, II, 3, 4, 5

Thanks, never thought about it on a watch dial. smile

I read that the original California dials were samples to show both numeral styles.

'California' dialled PAM424. It's one of my favourites, and surprisingly wearable at 47mm.

Bought this in April and hid it from the wife until her birthday today
There’s some weapons-grade bolleaux going on this thread.

Nice lady watch, nice dial. Sure she will be delighted!

You're surprised to see some pedantry and nitpicking on a watch thread? hehe

Not posted in here for ages. Working at home today. A bit of vintage valjoux- beaten up to hell but I think it looks great. £4 Perlon strap looks great, I think. I much prefer these to a Nato: less material.

Nice looking watch. But I'm pretty sure that's a IIII replacing the IV !
I am actually going a bit mental.

You're quite right - I'm a git.

And thanks, I do love this watch. Not so sure about the grey croc strap. Bit feminine perhaps. My wife wears this watch more than I do and likes the strap. I like it because it's a Franck Muller one with the handy lever on the spring bar. By the way- what a great idea they are for polished dress watches. The prospect of scratching the backs of the lug when changing straps is eradicated.

Definitely overlooked, and thanks. This is the Cal 920 with the date function made in quite small numbers compared to the non date. I bought this for £400 and I suspect you're looking at 8-900 for the driver, but either way prices are pretty good. The watch is quite small so I expect this has kept prices low. That and the fact that the Chronostop is a pretty useless complication!
