would you not just ensure it is insured to the appropriate value? It's not like they double in value overnight.

Some might. Others might not. There's no one right answer. The point is that the more valuable the item the more people will say "that's a lot of money to take to the beach/shops/office, I'll leave it in the drawer today".

you could argue that about a luxury watch full stop though. It is a lot of money to take anywhere yes, but watches live on your wrist otherwise what's teh point. I only have one though, so i guess if i had a collection of expensive watches i would think differently. I do have a collection, just of very crappy old soviets that barely keep time or don't at all! They are collectively worth about £50 if that.

Many high value watches are bought to celebrate something - they are a bit irreplaceable. Some are no longer made too.... I have a couple of watches that can't be bought any more. Some Pateks (for example) have a long waiting list too.

I don't take my valuable ones on holiday for example - partly I don't want to expose them to high heat, also I wouldn't know if I was wondering into an area where I might be mugged (there's a thread here of a watch being nicked in Barcelona for example).

As above, everyone has different reasons for doing things.

why would you stop wearing a watch because the value of it has increased?
No logic to it really. It's probably more investment-justification than risk management. Plus my daily wear has changed a bit more towards the Pelagos and my IWC.

well yes it's clearly wise to be careful with anything that means something to you. However, sentimental value and irreplaceability is not what's being cited here... he's talking purely about monetary here i.e. when it was worth £5k i would wear it but now it's worth £5.5k i won't, type thing. Dunno about the real numbers but you get the drift.

Got it. I must confess to not reading the original quote. smile

£5k is not a watch I'd be too precious about... £20k, I would.

Ooops.... I guess that did sound a bit awful.

I just think a £5k watch is probably something that you can replace relatively easily.

Did you ever hear the expression "when in a hole, stop digging"? £5k is a year's mortgage for a lot of people, so the notion of finding it relatively easily is laughable. Conversely £20k might be what Roman Abramowitz spends on yacht cleaning every month without knowing it's gone, so nobody round here needs to start willy waving over what they could replace.

I read it as its less likely be rare or hard to find so the insurance will be able to replace it.
