Oh. I paid £4,900 for a year-old 11640 SUB ND last June (box and papers). Cheapest going from a reputable reseller. No one else was selling at £4,000

Not in my experience.

Thanks for the replies guys, some useful bits in there.

And to those of you who have said that I need to research thoroughly, you're right, I do! Just thought this was a good spot to canvas a few people's opinions early on.

Ultimately it is the name Rolex that has led me to them and I don't mind admitting it.

As I'm sure you're all dying to know what I will eventually get I'll post here to complete the tale.

If I were the OP, I would be begging borrowing and stealing another £1000 to top up my budget and buy this:

Tried a new one of those on today when picking another Rolex up from having a service.

Sorely tempted; it was a thing of beauty and with green lettering and hand looked exquisite. I resisted though as I like a bit more colour than that on my watches (e.g. Batman/Pepsi/Kermit et al). I did nearly buckle though...

I wen down this route recently as had always wanted a Rolex Submariner but even second hand felt it was too much cash.

Ended up buying a Tudor Heritage at duty free, had the classic looks, Rolex connection, great price and absolutely chuffed with it....agree with comments that you should try a few on and buy what you like and not just a brand

Happy hunting!

I recently bought a new Air King and also bought a Rubber B strap for it - I have to say I am really impressed with it.

Not everyone's cup of tea - but when they were announced at Basel World last year I asked the jeweler to get one in for me - April 2017 I get a call...

All in I think I paid $250 USD for the rubber strap and I think it was £4650 for the Air King from my local Rolex Shop in the UK .

Worth a look?

The new Air King looks nice, a friend wears an older one , it was his 21st present from his parents, he is now 56!

OP - I would pay Watches of Switzerland a visit. The pre-loved watches they sell are serviced, usually look brand new and come with a 2 year guarantee.
Have bought Rolex, Breitling, Omega and Tag Heuer watches from them before and have always been very satisfied with the experience.

Does not compute.
Surely you must feel the need to actually like the watch (as opposed to just the name on the dial) you'll spend £4K on and wear?

Very nice. I tried one on in the States last year and really liked it. Exchange rate wasn't favourable though. Not seen one in the U.K. Yet.

Around £4k or a fair bit under, I'd recommend the Explorer 2. Same movement as the GMT but a bit less money, and IMO under-valued at the moment. I'd expect to pay around £3250

How are you (the OP) intending to wear the watch? The auto is good for a daily, but if this a weekend only watch then a quartz may be more suitable. I found it a complete pain to keep resetting the time and date on each wear, and the solution of a winder meant the watch stayed in the winder as it was easier to grab yesterday's watch on the table from last night.

I fully understand that many watch owners prefer the automatic movement; I went down the quartz route and have not regretted that decision.

Also comes with a black dial if that pleases the inner man in you.
