Suggest me a watch for £1500
Discussion
Hi,
I have a birthday coming up and someones offering to buy me a watch.
I'd like something a bit different and individual, but other than that i have very little idea as to what i fancy, i'm not bothered whether its a birth year (1977) watch, or a brand new one. I don't have a great deal of affection for the usual sub type watches, but i have yet to get one on my wrist, so i could be persuaded.
Having had a walk around some local jewellers the other day i saw a Hamilton triangular watch and a Baume & Mercier watch that i liked the look of.
It's mainly going to be for best and holidays, but if its hard enough wearing i might wear it for work once in a while (IT Tech)
Thanks for any suggestions

I'll suggest a Christopher Ward, not on my own experience just in pictures online i have seen.
Quite like this one in the link.

I don't know what kind of IT tech you are but I wouldn't have thought any £1500 modern watch couldn't cope with that kind of "punishment".
I'd certainly echo the recommendations for Oris. I have 2 and love them - most of their watches are £1000-£2000, and their dive watches are really nice. This is the one I'm wearing today:

Whatever watch you get, you're generally unlikely to see anyone else wearing exactly the same one (unless you buy something very popular like an Omega Seamaster or a Rolex submariner), but for something dressy, the above-mentioned Junghans is really nice, but here are a few options of different styles - look on Jurawatches.co.uk for a good idea of what's available new.

Those are just a few I like the look of. There are loads of nice ones available.
The link below is to a "birth year" watch on chrono24.co.uk. Quite a nice old-school diver (I was born in 78 - wouldn't mind a decent watch from that year for my 40th next year - its a good idea)

Spend some time and draw a 'like' list - even create a file on your computer with images (of watches) so you can just review,
I have a Ball Watch Company watch and can vouch for their quality for the price
Jura is a good shout for comparing many brands
at £1.5k I'd also think about a Sinn (for the diver look) or a basic U-boat
Another set of images to think about

There is a PHer who makes his own watches

If you can get along with the design, it's a great watch for the money.

The Hamilton that you've seen would have been one of their Ventura models, the original of which was the first ever battery powered electronic watch launched, IIRC, some time in the late 50's. It was also worn by Elvis and both Agent J and Agent K - I'll leave you to look up who the last two are Having had a walk around some local jewellers the other day i saw a Hamilton triangular watch...

If you're more into the hardware side of IT rather than software then you should keep in mind that it'll most probably get scratched up regardless of the brand, though Sinn and Damasko offer hardened cases that should stand up to some abuse. The tegimented Sinns will be out of your price range though all Damaskos use their hardened proprietary steel - look them up. I'll offer up another German suggestion, that being Stowa, though you'll find it nigh on impossible to try on any of those three brands prior to buying.
Edit to add that I own Sinn, Damasko and Stowa watches so I may be a touch bias... Though I can vouch for both their quality and the scratch resistance of the hardened Sinn and Damasko steels.

Autos come into that price range as well, in both diver and Aqua Terra Seamaster ranges. Buying private will give more options, from a retailer/dealer less so.
Do Planet Oceans still get down to those kind of figures? What ever you buy I urge you to go and try a few things on. Very difficult to know from pictures.
A Rado HyperChrome or Centrix chronograph might interest you. The ceramic case is very hard-wearing and I found their Thinline all-ceramic strap one of the most comfortable on the wrist when I tried one on.

Rado are strange brand with an incredibly diverse range of styles and materials; seem to be well made and finished but don't hold their value (perhaps because they don't have an iconic design like the Sub or 911).
