I've been enjoying the thread and your 'problem' in having to choose the right watch.

Clearly there are many considerations apart from looks, but for my money (not £40k!), the Lange & Sohne looks the nicest watch by far, with the Vacheron in second.

Of course what is important is what you think - looking forward to your decision!

For me, the cream face and tan strap 5940J is just cloud9 It melds onto your wrist like it should always have been there.
The cushion case gives a nod towards the unconventional while still retaining the dress watch style.

I have bought 3 Patek's so far. 1st one was new Officers model but from a trader so got it at a good price. Second was used Neptune from a watch shop in Florida and the 3rd was brand new from a Patek authorised jeweller.

All currently sell way above what I paid for them. In fact, the World Time which was the one I bought new in 2007 has recently been discontinued and a new design variation has come out which I quite like the look of.

From when I bought the World Time until now, the retail price has doubled and traders seem to be willing to pay 30% or more than I paid for it.

So, in summary, I don't think it matters too much if you buy new or used if you are planning on keeping it for 5-10 years.

If buying used I would recommend looking at the traders in New York, Phoenix and Florida. Even with the current poor exchange rate its worth a long weekend jaunt!

I'd be trying every trick in the book to get my paws on a Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk -

Do any of the watches under consideration really hold their value?

I would have thought the market is very illiquid and that most people would want to buy from a dealer.
There was a very interesting article about the 'grey market' in the FT this weekend;
I didn't realise that most of the watches sold by grey market dealers, have been sold to them
by authorised dealers shifting their own stock that they've been unable to sell.

The PP looks perfect on your wrist and is cool and understated. You were meant to wear this watch!

If you engage your Mr Logic head (and I would argue you should not EVER do that at this price), I can see why you might end up choosing an A Lange Sohne watch. They look impressive and tick all the right boxes if you're a massive watch nerd but lets be honest they're not particularly stylish and they never look as good on the wrist as they do on the shelf.

On a forum where people own half million - million quid cars?

Crazy thing is that, in terms of *properly* high end watches, 40 grand is nowt!

RM seem a bit like the new Jacob & co. I think the op is after something a bit more discrete, which they don't do.

What does the "2" stand for on the dial, right next to the month/day?

On the Vacheron? I imagine it's the 2nd of February which is a Wednesday ?

No it's isn't that, the days of the month are bottom dial

Hmm good question, power reserve?

Saw the date on the bottom indeed, and it's only one digit anyway. Was thinking power reserve but does look out of place somewhat :/

It's a leap year indicator.
