Ok I've got a chance of buying a new white face Dayton a in Paris. I'm heading to Africa for work and would pick it up on the way back (taking it there seems like a very bad idea!). So price is £9300 with exchange rate. Would I be due any tax when I come back to UK with it?

Also they insist they can only sell it to me if I buy another none sought after model pain in the arse but thinking I'd sell it on and not lose to much. Any suggestions what to buy as second watch that would be saleable? Needs to be less than 5k new as well.

If your buying at CDG, 'duty free', then of course you have to walk through the red channel when you come home, declare it and pay the VAT.

A lot of people will have loads of good ways of avoiding getting caught, but remember that this is a public forum, and some smart cookie at HMRC might be able to trace your email address, name, flight number and red flag you.

Where in Africa? I used to go to Angola a lot without getting my watch stolen, mind you anything from Rolex is an easy spot so you're probably right in buying on the way home.

It would only be the vat that I'd be due for though?

Going offshore to the ivory coast no way I'd risk it.

Looks like those Daytona are selling for £15k plus second hand so still worth it even with the vat...

Pretty sure it'll just be 20% vat. If you bought outside the EU you'd also pick up a customs tariff of around 4%.

I've not been on any of the Ivory Coast platforms, but expect they're generally just like the Angola ones - ie perfectly nice, good food and accommodation, and Sky on the TV

Would you really get 15k in a private transaction or is that a dealer price?

Probably not but I've been offered £12.5k from a dealer already with one call so can use that as a minimum figure.

Probably get back 75% for any other none sought after watch I buy as well so lose 1k on that.

Hmm decisions.

I used to work rotation in Southern Africa a lot. Bought a tonne of gear in UK, and claimed VAT back at Gat or Heathrow.

Got the visas, got the overseas work contract, got evidence of less than 90 days in UK over a number of years. No issues.

Think if you can also prove it’s been purchased and immediately taken outside the EU for 6months, not VAT is payable on return. Depends on your rota and security if less than a 6month swing.

Addendum,

Buy a Daytona and they want you to but another non-popular model?

Much as I want one, I would tell them to do one and stick-it. Rolex are creating a monster which is eventually going to take them down and leave everyone with a major haircut when this stupid market inevitably collapses.

Why don’t Rolex start making less Datejusts and Perps and Cellinis and up the Daytona and Sun-class watches that people definitely want to buy?

Broken record mode off.

Left it in the end, spent to much time thinking about it and ran out of time to buy plus it really bugged me they wanted me to buy a second, can't believe that it is official Rolex policy like they say. They had a green face milgaus as well that I'd have liked so offered to buy that as a second and said it did not count 😤

DJ41s are doing well, last time I checked there was a short waiting list on the new steel blue face in the UK. I'd say you'd lose less than a grand on one, countered by the £5k you'd make on the Daytona.

Would have been easy money if cash flow wasn't an issue.

You will not pay VAT on any item bought in an EU member country, even if bought at the airport. Like at Heathrow, you will be sold it at a discount equivalent to the VAT.
