Morning

My wife is off to New York in March and intends on buying herself a new watch - specifically a Tag Carrera Calibre 9 with rose gold. Could anyone recommend a particular shop for her to purchase the watch.

Thanks

Is it worth it? When you add 20% import duty (tax evasion is decidedly non-U) the cost will be equal to what you'd pay in the UK.

I don't know to be honest - she got dollars for her birthday and want to buy a watch hen she was there. It's not really about the price, just somewhere reputable.

How about Gemnation?

They are in Brooklyn I think. I got an astounding deal over the net 2 years ago on a Bremont. They were fantastic to deal with. You could probably negotiate with them before you travel, assuming they have the watch you want.

Wear the watch on your wrist home, post all the papers/tags/receipts etc back to yourself, keep the box in your luggage and if anybody asks simply say you use the box to keep the watch safe for when you travel.

Job done.

Unless the watch is considerable cheaper over the pond (which I doubt with the current exchange rates) it seems like a load of unnecessary hassle.
I'd be exchanging the $ into £ and popping in my local AD, then all the paperwork is UK based, no issues with warranties, no dodging import duties palaver and no carrying it half way round the world.
I wouldn't be surprised if a local AD couldn't do a better deal on it anyway, I'd be surprised if it wasn't a watch that they had a little 'wriggle room' on the price. scratchchin

A watch i am looking at is a good 5k cheaper in New York than anywhere over here. As mentioned before wear the watch on your wrist and post the rest. The 5k pays for the holiday.

Remember that sales tax is added to advertised prices here....plenty of places and some are more reputable than others.
Do not purchase on 47th st unless you know what you are doing

Macy’s ... go to customer service on the first floor mezzanine with your passport and get a visitor discount card and it’ll give 10% off all purchases for a month from date of issue

Will you have access to a car? 2 hours south of NYC is Delaware. Delaware is a sales tax free state so the price you see is the one you pay. We bought my wife's grape dial from here

Granted it was a couple of years ago when the exchange rate was favourable which gave an even greater saving with no tax.

Though I should update the thread, she had narrowed the purchase to 3 models and ended up getting a great deal from a local jeweller - Lunns in Belfast instead of waiting and the import vat issue.
