Rolex Waiting Lists

Enquiried about a SS Daytona yesterday at an AD and was told 7 years. Pressed further (no history with them but was able to demonstrate that I was serious) and 7 years became “within 12 months”. The wait-lists are bullst.
So what did you need to do to demonstrate that you were serious if you don’t mind me asking ?Nomal said:

Showed him the watch I was wearing. Also assured him that I would be a cash buyer. Each financed deal costs the shop. Evidently, many people on their waiting list are time-wasters.Hang On said:

Who was the AD? I’ve tried loads and just get a brick wall.

With respect, ‘Who was the AD?’ misses the point. Several people had been in that day, as they do most days, asking to be put on various waiting lists and had all been told flatly that the lists are closed. Walking in unannounced and asking to be put on a list is the worst way to go about getting a watch.I’m as serious as they come and want to buy to wear rather than have as a trinket in a box or flip
I had never bought from this retailer but this was my third or fourth visit to the shop. I wore a different watch each time, as a talking point, and we shared perspectives on Rolex and other brands, on Baselworld 2018, football, house contents insurance etc, etc...... I never even hinted that I wanted a scarce watch until the end of our last chat.
You might want to find a good young salesperson at an AD sufficiently local to you that you can drop in a lot, develop a relationship with them, establish that they are personally responsible for allocating the watches that come in, assure them that you are a serious collector and take it from there. They can sell these watches several times over and, unless you resort to bribery, they make the same money from each (cash) purchase. So there are other factors at play in their decision making process. You have to work that. The lists are nonsense; there is no first come first served.
By ‘serious’ I mean that you have already built a collection of some sort, that you will be buying several watches over the course of the next few years. You will always buy from that salesman, following him to another store if needed. You will buy through good times and bad. You are not interested in resale values. You will introduce friends and family members who will also buy through him etc, etc........
...... none of this need necessarily be true but you need to sell the story well enough for it to be plausible. The salesman will give preferential treatment to lifetime costumers with a big sales potential and to his friends. Become both.

So not quite a case of walking in cold & being told within 12 months! I tend to agree the waitlists are BS.Allocation of anything rare (Daytona) will be a function of right place/right time; mates; previous high spenders. I doubt anything else matters.GT03ROB said:

You can see it from the shop's point of view though - if you have a desirable product (SS Sub, GMT, Daytona) why on earth would you sell it to a "walk in" customer? Surely better to "reward" customers who've already put some money your way and let them have first dibs...? "Adding you to a list" would seem to be a face saving way to get rid of a new customer who keeps asking about a Pepsi GMT...

Don't get me wrong..... if it there is a scarce resource where the price is fixed, I wouldn't expect anything other than what I stated happening.
Indeed - I was just questioning the likelihood of being offered a SS Daytona within a year after 4 visits to a shop (without buying anything). I think for us mere mortals our only chance is getting lucky at an airport. I pop in about once a week - great if you want a datejust, Cellini or PM piece but that's about it.

From what I understand of the more recent situation is that the difficult to get stuff gets run past the store manager, sales person has to pitch your case!

Make friends with the shop assistant, become a regular customer, wipe their ar5e, shine their shoes etc etc.
What a palava. Has everyone lost all perspective? Or gone mad?
It’s just a steel watch, a mass produced, machined watch from a mid tier manufacturer, that is all.
