Nabbed one of those in the Ernest Jones sale for £215 a couple of weeks ago and it's the comfiest watch I have, looks great too.
Just ordered a cheap sharkmesh for mine. Haven't put it on yet.

Undone Watches might just be the answer... you can build your own watch, choosing case, dial, handsets, straps, in a variety of options. 30 seconds of playing about gave me this, for £220:

Whereas 30 seconds of playing about gave me this:

I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.

There are some Christopher ward bargains in the summer sale:

https://www.christopherward.co.uk/events/summer-cl...

This one caught my eye, whether your 21yr old son would like depends on taste.

Couple of others worth a look:

Also all Christopher ward watches come with their 60/60 facility so 60 month warranty and 60 day exchange.

I have a C60 trident, ceramic red bezel, on steel bracelet, and its fantastic, great watch keeps faultless time, and the polished centre links, and red ceramic bezel really stands out.

Have a look see their range.

To the original poster, I'm in a simlar position as you and my decision has came down to these two utilitarian models.

Both by Citizen.
Both 200m
Both Eco drive

Currently on discount at The Watch Shop.

Probably the metal bracelet will be better for me so its more suitable for evening atire.
However i like the rubber strap model as it has the diving depths printed on the strap which is cool.

Everyone hates an unfinished thread, so here we go. A colleague and fellow PHer very kindly let me try on his Seiko Chronos, and I liked them a great deal. However, I really preferred the stainless case one he owns to the black case. I toyed with a rose gold plated version of the watch below, but we both decided that it was a bit shiny for a daily/beater watch. So I have just ordered this...

Essentially the same watch as the one I originally posted, but with different hands and a stainless case. It cost £220 delivered. Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. I think I may treat myself to a Christopher Ward auto one day too...

Bought this a couple of weeks ago for £220. If you don't embrace the 'wide awake' yellow, you'll need to pay nearer £280
