I’ve alsways disliked most chrongraphs but love the Moonwatch. I also like the FOIS that Dom has advertised.

My small collection has completely black dails as it is. I also keep considering if another single expensive (to me) watch such as a moonwatch, ETA black bay black, Tudor GMT, late 90s sub is the way to go or get a couple of nice but cheaper pieces.

What’s the residuals like on Moonwatches?

The moon watch is just right on almost every level. Clear and easy to read, uncluttered, elegant and timeless (so to speak). It's an iconic design.

£2400-£2500 seems to be the going rate for a used Speedy Pro so as long as you don’t pay rrp for one you shouldn’t loose too much. Obviously keep all boxes/papers and look after the watch.

I love my moonwatch. The only criticism I have is the steel bracelet - It doesn't have as much scope for adjustment without messing with the links, and I find the clasp a tad uncomfortable when sitting at a desk using a mouse in my 'watch hand'. My GMT Master is far more comfortable in this respect.

Sorely tempted to try a tan leather strap on mine similar the the one earlier in the thread. Whoever said they look great on a variety of straps is dead right.

The speedy Pro is an absolute icon. If I was in the market for one now though I might just hang on till next year to see if Omega bring out anything to mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Speedy special editions are 10 a penny it seems, but some are fantastic - that wonderful Snoopy posted earlier for example - and it might be worth waiting and seeing what they put out.

Just a thought.

I love the speedy pro but I wonder if the constant LE speedy pros are diluting the brand a bit?

That particular horse bolted a very long time ago where Omega is concerned.

But the classic Moonwatch is a watch apart, and I think it will remain no less popular for it.

I agree but it wasn’t that long ago when the speedy pro and a Rolex submariner were a (reasonably) similar priced choice. Now the Sub is over 6K and has a long UK waiting list, and you can get a speedy pro under list from a dealer where they’re 3.5k new.

I think Rolex has been much better at protecting its brand value than omega and part of that is the tie ins and ltd editions omega seem intent on churning out.

I don’t disagree with you.

Omega has shareholders to appease, and so throws anything & everything at the wall to see what sticks, and it often looks incoherent and rushed. Rolex is owned by private trust and can do whatever it likes, but presumably thinks it is best being conservative/boring and sticking to what it does best, with regular engineering enhancements but little aesthetic change.

I’m not knocking Omega, they have a fine stable of classic models and some great technology, but it’s frustrating to see their headlong rush to bang out model after model.

The Moonwatch is an interesting piece because the simple fact is that it by definition has to stay exactly the same - change it, and it’s not the spec that NASA etc. have signed-off on, and loses that position. So, there will always be a Moonwatch. If you cannot change the watch in any way, then how do you justify keeping pace with Submariner pricing? Consumer demand isn’t the same, so you can’t play the scarcity or value retention cards. They can’t possibly promote it any more than they do either. That’s why they provide that ridiculously huge (but admittedly enjoyable) box with a load of stuff no-one asked for (loupe, paperweight medallion, velcro strap etc.) - as a way of justifying a price increase.

Then they have their co-axial, ceramic cased, sapphire crystal, moonphase etc. Speedmasters as a separate field to take on Rolex’s price point. But I still prefer my Moonwatch, because it’s near-perfection and probably the last watch I’d sell if I fell on hard times.

The Moonwatch is not the latest technology and lacks many of the materials/features buyers have come to expect, so it’s probably correctly priced at the moment - Omega need to be careful not to leave it stranded in no-mans land by pushing prices too high. Keep the price commensurate with the product and it’ll still be a big seller in 50 years. Rolex is a different phenomenon onto itself.

Wow, Speedy prices seem to have gone up quite a bit over the years (or I'm showing my age...). Picked up a new new Speedy Pro (albeit about year old, unworn from a shop stopping selling Omega) for about 1,270 UKP in 2008... That's almost 9% increase per year...

But anyways you can't go wrong with a Speedy Pro, it's a genuine timeless classic which fits in any surrounding.

A little pic with a matching background. Added a semi-vintage and affordable 1171/633 bracelet and end-links as I preferred this over the more 'solid' newer bracelets.

Ive got one of those bracelets too. It’s the Apollo era one isn’t it?

I sometimes get distracted by the Speedy TinTin or the very old ones on well worn brown straps!

I believe they were delivered on Speedmaster from late 60's/early 70's to the 80s. So more of less yes. The original ones are quite expensive, the modern re-issue is an affordable way to give your Speedy a more vintage vibe. (Although I'm not sure if can still get these bracelets nowadays after a quick google search?)
For the purists of course adding that bracelet to a modern Speedy is not correct.

My wife bought me my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch for my 30th birthday in 2013 - she paid £2475 to Goldsmiths at the time, down from £3280. It's my only luxury watch and I actually don't have a hankering for anything else really - I tried a Breitling Navitimer and a Rolex Oyster perpetual, but the Omega felt more right to me.

I've been looking at these too on eBay - there seems to be a fair few brand new ones coming up for sale from private sellers for around £2600 - wondering what the scam is here as they smell a bit fishy to me.

Further to my earlier post about the uncomfortable steel bracelet, and seeing the poster mention Geckota straps, I went and ordered one. Not expensive and looks well made - no complaints at all in that regard. It’s also comfortable and proves that the speedy looks good on a variety of straps smile

Doing some swapping and changing earlier...

It does indeed look good. That’s a great photo, nice watches, both iconic.

Thanks for that - I’d never part with either of them. Others may come and go but those two go nowhere.

Just go with Dom Hackett. I got mine and then ordered about 4 different straps!
