Cat amongst the pigeons - I personally think TAG Heuer are more innovate than Rolex. Example? MikroTourbillonS, Mikrotimer Flying 1000, MikroGirder 2000, Pendulum (concept) ... even the Carrera Heuer-02T, which incorporates a chronograph and tourbillon for less than a Daytona!
I had a problem with one of my TAG Heuer watches, which after being sent back to TAG Heuer in Switzerland, resulted in the return of the watch with a note stating that, "all Calibre S movements do that!". I wasn't best pleased. However I've also owned a Formula 1 Gulf Edition, which was really nice ... I just struggled to live with the quartz ticking!
My advice? If you want to buy brand new, speak to Dominic H of Hackett Watches! Alternatively, second hand is usually recommended. Definitely buy whatever you like! For me, it would have to be a Monaco ...

Mine froze a few times when changing between functions, which was pretty annoying. However the aspect that bothered me the most was the central chronograph second hand, which at rest, would wobble 1/2 second in each direction (a total of one second) depending on your wrist angle. It was as though the hand wasn't mounted to the mechanism properly.
TAG Heuer didn't see this as an issue. Considering the watch was just over £2000 and capable of accurately measuring to 1/100th of a second, it bothered me! I sold it on 3 months later for £900. New owner wasn't as fussed.
Probably the most comfortable stainless steel bracelet ever ...

I think Tag get a lot of stick but they are well made watches IMO. I've had a Carrera for a couple of years and had zero problems with it. Selling it on now as I've bought a Speedy Pro.

That's the newer variant to the one I had, which means they may have sorted all the issues with the Calibre S by then! You can tell, as yours has different indices, re-designed sub-dial curves and the '1/100' marking as a 'th' afterwards.Composite Guru said:
Snap. I have the Titanium version. Love it.
I don’t give a rats what people think of it on here. I like it so end of.
I have the ceramic version it's very nice. Tag make some of the best looking watches. I tend to buy stuff I just like rather than any sniffiness about brand. I have the F1 James hunt and a connected S1 as a daily too. I don’t give a rats what people think of it on here. I like it so end of.
Trick with Tags is to buy lightly used. The 01 I dropped on for a very good price on eBay just biding my time.
Watch collectors have long memories. Heuer were a very well regarded manufacturer. Then in 1985, TAG bought them, formed Tag Heuer and, well, ruined them.
This is an example of the very expensive tat they were pedalling:
If you take a decent watch brand and use its image to shovel mass produced quartz junk at inflated prices, you will upset watch collectors. That's exactly what TAG did and that's exactly what happened. Yes you could argue Heuer were failing financially and that TAG saved them, but all a collector cares about is that TAG ruined the brand.
Since the turn of the century the watches have got slowly, steadily, better.
Read some of the numerous interviews with Jean-Claude Biver. Then read between the lines, he never talks about where the manufacturer are coming from, just where he wants to take them to. If you assume that the company aren't yet at his desired destination and work backwards, then you'll see that their image is a problem for them.
Are the current watches deserving of derision? No, I don't think they are any more. I'd say they represent fair value compared to their competitors (J-C wants them to be seen as excellent value). Three or four years ago I'd have said they were overpriced and you could buy better for the same price.
Are the early TAG Heuers deserving of derision. Yes, absolutely.
