People have no issues if theft has never happened to them and if/when it does they're the first to have a whinge. Prevention is better than cure.

I just put my watch and valuables in my carryon and padlock it before putting it through the scanner. Job jobbed.
Exactly this, why would anyone would wish to leave anything of value floating around in a tray is beyond me.

Daytona stays on the wrist (i usually make sure they see that's all i have by rolling up the sleeves) but goes in the tray if it has to, without second thoughts

I put mine in coat pocket (if wearing) and put in the tray - that way it's out of sight...

...Pick a busy 'business' flight, just so that people are likely to be very used to flying and so more relaxed, pick a gaggle of hopefully well jewelled / equipped travellers to loiter near and then manage to get just in front of them in the queue etc.

Naturally you do need to actually book yourself a ticket and such so it's not exactly convenient, ...
You're going to need to book a business class ticket to make this work as 'business' people are all in the fast-track lane with separate x-ray and security, so we don't have to mix with riff-raff and can get to the business lounge quicker so we can neck more g&t and nick more car mags before the flight departs.

On a separate note, as someone with a lot of metal in my leg,s I've noticed the best London airport for not setting the scanners off is City.

Heathrow T5 & Manchester T3 today, watch stayed on the wrist both ways and was not asked to remove.

Is this airport specific I wonder?

Yes it is. I flew from Heathrow t5 on Monday without having to remove my watch but flying from Dubai last week my Rolex had to be removed.
