walk in AD ….. here's a sub, here's a ND sub, here's a GMT... which one do you like most? GMT? No problem sir, will that be cash or card? Yes, 10% off for cash. Thank you, I'll just count the notes out.
You walked into a watch shop with 6K in cash on the of chance they might have a watch you liked? hehe

My experience - wife and I going into a AD in 2015, lots of stainless steel sports watches. Tried on Sub, Deep Sea, Sea Dweller. Left shop, walked to beach, sat on beach with a piña colada, wife said it’s your birthday so which one did you like. Either the sub or the sea dweller I said. Which one do you want, she asked, er, the Sea Dweller. Stay here, let me go back and get it she said. Sorted.

blimey, what self respecting, stair dominating, powerfully built PH Director wouldn't be wondering round with less than 6 large in his wallet, beggars belief!

Yup. Sint Maarten. Biggest Rolex AD in the Caribbean.

The key is the relationship with the AD. Nobody is going to be able to walk in an buy a stainless steel sports watch such as a Daytona as their first watch, unless a celeb / famous.

The waiting list is a myth. The Managing Director of the store chooses who will get a watch.
The policy is to sell to repeat customers who want to 'climb the ladder'.

So, you can buy an entry level watch, Date just, GMT or Sub SS as a first watch with a wait 6-12 weeks.
But will need to but a couple of those before progressing to a Sea Dweller, Deepsea or Daytona (unicorn) if lucky.
I've found it handy to discuss my ongoing requirements with the AD. "This year I'd like to buy this, next year, I'll be looking at one of these etc."

My theory is you need to spend at least the price of the watch you really want (on other watches) before it will be offered. So, a GMT and Sub, (6k + 6k =12k) before moving up. Unless of course you've got the money and desire to buy a gold or platinum watch, then just buy and go!

And this LAdies and Gents is what Rolex want all us poor monkeys to believe. What a crock of piss.

The Daytona is as ugly as sin anyway so wouldn't take one unless I wanted to flip it.

As for the rest, try getting any SS pro model up here and you're on a hiding to nothing. They really need to be told to feckaff and folk should spunk the money on a Royal Oak ! lol.

It's not what they want you to believe - it's their business model.
Same as Porsche and GT cars. You can't just drop into the local OPC and buy a GT3.
Not worth getting cross about. It's just the way it is, it's a game to be played.

I’m sorry but none of that is correct.

It’s a bit of a sorry statement on society if you actually believe what you’ve posted.

Genuinely How do you think it works then? There's no need to judge, it's just my experience.
And the experience that a lot of other people in this thread have shared.

If you can walk into a Rolex dealer and buy an SS Daytona or an OPC and buy a GT3 as a completely new, cold off the street customer,
then genuinely great. But that hasn't been my experience or that of others.

If you could also clarify why none of it's correct that would be good. You've conflated my opinion with the opinion of the whole of society, which is quite a leap. I didn't invent this stuff, I'm just a consumer and observer like anyone else.

I was genuinely trying to share something of use to the OP who was trying to buy a Rolex and couldn't understand why he couldn't get what he wanted.
It's not unfair to say that luxury + exclusive brands employ strategies which make their brands exclusive. That's not a sorry statement on society, that's just reality.
There are numerous examples of this. VIP guest lounges, Box tickets at Wimbledon, Paddock passes at F1 events. There is a price for access. That is a business model.

Yep, we have a local BMW dealer that has a similar "people want to buy BMW anyways" attitude. Puts me off completely.

They don't though. It's discrete and polite. You'll able to buy a watch, but maybe not the higher end watches. You'll be told that you're on the waiting list.
That's what this entire discussion is about.

Depends how it’s said, not what’s said.
