Otherwise Casio f91-w
Another vote here. Super cheap, and yet a little iconic.
Is that the Taliban limited edition piece?
hehe

If you made an IED using one of these there’s a very good chance you could reuse the watch.

Don't forget Timex. May be too big for you but plenty to choose from.

I'm more a fan of the W-86-1VQES over the F91-W, as it's properly waterproofed.

For those not a fan of digital/quartz, there are plenty of Vostok automatic/waterproof at well under £100 - recently bought one myself which fits the brief.

What’s it like in the metal?

Absolutely fan-bloody-tastic!

Cheap
Fun
Cool (Russian writing on the face)
Rugged
Automatic
Innovative design
Practical
Heritage
Available
In house movement

My wife has nicked mine for our beach holiday!

The straps they come on are generally a bit gash but they sit nicely on a NATO. Lug width 18mm.

I bought two direct from Russia at about £50 each. Probably not as tough as the 5600 series gshocks but way more character.

Or maybe tougher than a G-Shock wink when it comes to water resistance/pressure: the Vostok tested to 820m thread.

Great watch.
Looks great. Who needs a rolex?
Add a nato strap from ebay for £4.
Waterproof 200m.
You won’t want to change it.

Some super suggestions on this thread.

A friend has a Vostok and it’s great. Very tempted myself.

+1 for all the suggestions to go Japanese. My holiday (and weekend ”beater”) watch is a Seiko Sumo (Blumo to be accurate). They’re too expensive these days to be used like this now, but mine only cost me £300 and I love it on a Crafter Blue rubber strap. It’s been scuba diving so it’s existence is justified..!

But one of the Casio’s..!

For the money that's pretty unbeatable.

Agree with everything Barchettaman said above, watch seems decent enough quality and keeps decent time although the crown is a bit wobbly when unscrewed, strap OK but the whole thing is better/cooler than the sum of it's parts and at the price you can't go wrong.

Certainly beats a kids plastic digital watch IMO...

The wobbly crown is worrying at first, I agree, but is actually a deliberate & clever bit of Soviet engineering - designed so as the crown uncouples from the winding stem in order that any shocks that hit the crown are not transmitted to the movement via the stem.

Completely agree that it's a tremendous little watch with a very interesting engineering ethos that differs from the mass approach. I have a nice little 80's Amphibia in need of some restoration efforts but with bucketloads of oddball charm. Bracelet & bezels notoriously a bit dodgy, though.

As regards a great holiday watch, this deal is something I did last summer (although it was only £50 then, whereas it's £65 now): https://divernet.com/product/12-issues-of-diver-fo...

Basically, £65 all-in buys you 12 paper copies of 'Diver' Magazine delivered to your door, plus a 'free' gift by way of an Apeks quartz dive watch on a rubber strap. If you have a cursory interest in diving, it's a compelling deal.

The watch is actually good - a Seiko quartz engine, in a casing that I suspect is Citizen. Apeks is a brand that you'll find in Dive shops, sold as a diving watch.

Good fun, and being analogue with a timing bezel, plus day & date function, it fulfills the poolside beater role nicely but with a little more class than a G-Shock (in my opinion).

Other than that, an Orient Mako is a bit over budget at circa £150 on Amazon (or around £110 on Creation, if you get away without VAT charges) and provides a really compelling, 'in-house' mechanical option on bracelet, but looks classy enough to dress up at dinner in the evening. It's been my go-to holiday watch for six years, and going away with me again this week. Oddly enough, also the watch I own that receives the most comments - possibly on account of the terrific electric-blue dial.

I have one those orients. Lovely watch for the money. The updated movement has done away with the day adjust crown but I prefer the old design.

I'd seen the 50 bar test but not the 82. Unbelievable for a £50 watch.

I tend to loose watches 'on holiday' - usually overboard or while shnorkelling.

The Casio 'Casino Royale' world time is water resist to 10 bar, excellent for foreign travel and also available in black. I tested mine with three Martinis, but couldn't read the dial after two.
