That a '23 CHNR is on watch collecting at £22k with 4 hrs to go is a sign.

When I purchased mines 2 years ago, they were listing at at £50-60k with the greys.

I expect it will have a £30k reserve and go unsold.

Or I can buy one from Chrono24 for £17k

They are under £30K on eBay but why anyone would want to spend that kind of money on a watch made in the 100,000’s in a factory is beyond me. Same with cars - there are many classics of which there are under 250 left in the world which are far more interesting to own and cheaper than £30K.

All you hear in the Rolex world is:

John Mayer
John Mayer
John Mayer
John Mayer
John Mayer

I mean, who the fk is John Meyer? I had never heard of him before in my entire life until all the internet Rolex commentators/youtubers started banging on about him constantly. I had to Google to find out who he was. He's a bloke who plays the guitar apparently.

He once bought a gold Daytona so now everything has to be named after him.

Or something.
He’s pretty famous, both as a musician and maybe even more well known as a collector of watches. Probably has one of the best collections there is.

This article suggested he spent a quarter of his net worth on watches. Well done that man… biggrin

I do like this quote…

I spend probably as much time thinking about or diving into watches as I do anything else

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/talking-watches-...

There’s a bit of this interview with Ed Sheeran where ES is talking about the huge sentimental value he attaches to his first watch (an £80 plastic “Toy” watch) and Meyer knows exactly what he means.

Most famous as Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriend surely.

I guess it depends on the type of music you listen to?

I'm 41 and I had genuinely never heard of him, and I listen to all kinds of different music genres.

I obviously know who he is now, since I googled him, and then read some interviews about his watch collecting.

He has 15 million monthly listeners on Spotify, he isn't Taylor Swift, but is pretty well known going on those numbers. I couldn't name a song, but had heard of him before the watch stuff all kicked off on Hodinkee.

My daughter got mentioned by Taylor Swift on Twitter the other day. Seems she has become a star herself at the school the kids go to!! Not that this has anything to do with watches though getmecoat

All in your opinion of course as I'm sure many people have many different reasons to purchase either a watch or a car

'Rare' or 'classic' does not necessarily mean 'good' though. It doesn't even necessarily mean interesting.

Some people are more interested in spending money on watches than cars, and vice versa. There is no right or wrong. Just buy whatever you like.

Fair enough, my point has been that with watches it seems there is a point where the value becomes a tiny fraction of the cost. I can understand £10-30k on a painting or on a rare car but the mass production of the watches and talk of having to suck up to a sales rep to even get onto a list to buy one leaves me cold and labelling the whole exercise as a complete con job - it looks like the market is an echo chamber of watch fans stoked by the AD’s.

But that’s only me, and I’ll leave it there but I suppose it’s good for you lot to have an outsiders view once in a while.
