Has the Rolex bubble finally burst? Perhaps it has

I wish more people understood that there is no such thing as an Alpha Male in humans, we aren't pack animals, we no more have Alpha Males than we have twelve nipples.
However, in most groups of men you will see typical characteristics such as the funny one, the quiet but capable one, the natural leader... Called in at my local AD today to see if any update of my enquiry over a year ago for GMT Master. Was informed of no further progress without even taking my name. Apparently COVID has reduced supply... Also asked if I have any other Rolexes, wish they would just tell me what I would need to buy to get what I want so I can decide whether to play the game or not.

Yep.
As soon as I saw these new colours, I was thinking “what on earth are Rolex playing at?”
Then I quickly realised they were aiming at the Love Island generation and they would likely sell them by the absolute truckload.
It was a very smart move.
I've always liked the simplicity of the Rolex sports, pieces like this just do nothing for me ... black, white, silver and gold is fine. In fact I don't like the hulk nor the batman. From the current range I would have the SD43 (I have ordered one, although unsure if I actually want it as I wouldn't replace my SD4K), I quite like the Explorer ... probably not enough to buy one and despite my lack of love for anything gold, I really really want 116518LN with Oysterflex and black face. The mad thing about this whole Rolex thing is that for the price of a grey market Sub, you can have a new Seamaster, a new Speedmaster MOTM, and a Deville Co Axial, and you can trot down to your local Omega boutique and get them all, brand new, right now, with warranty and everything.

And a discount if you’ve got any sense . It's crazy isn't it! I like the watches, and only a few years ago I was very tempted to buy a deep-sea at Bahrain Airport - I know right, a watch available to buy (?!). I can't reconcile paying over list for one or 'building a relationship' with shop staff to maybe get one.
The market is what it is, and that's fine by me. It's not an essential product after all.
The market will deflate when the others do - stock markets, car market etc. - which doesn't look like it's happening any time soon.

You'd get laughed at if you posted in a motoring forum that an Audi TT looks like a v10 R8. Or a Boxster looks like a 911 Turbo S.
But for people not into cars / watches, it is right on the money. Even if people spending a fortune on them can't admit it
To someone not into watches, it would be completely believable to them if you told them you bought that Tudor off a bloke on the beach in Tenerife.

How and where do they get water 5cm-thick?
Do you mean this:“ being lowered into a hyperbaric chamber (a dustbin-sized tank full of water 5cm-thick reinforced steel walls) where they will be subjected to pressures beyond their stated depth ratings.”
Self-explanatory I’d say.

Very interesting, thanks for posting. Why would Rolex not make their own hands? Seems strange when going to the lengths of smelting their own metal to outsource such a visible part?

I would agree if it said "a dustbin-sized tank with reinforced steel walls 5-cm thick and filled with water".“ being lowered into a hyperbaric chamber (a dustbin-sized tank full of water 5cm-thick reinforced steel walls) where they will be subjected to pressures beyond their stated depth ratings.”

When did we have to become collectors to buy things we want? Maybe I'm naïve, but this sort of thing may not be the most long-term of strategies, perhaps; they're only (mass-produced) watches.(Then again, I'm probably no longer their key market as I have my old, very plain, 36mm DJ and a closed-lug 16600 and most of the new stuff seems a bit big and shiny)
The only time I have ever waited for a watch was the ceramic bezel Daytona, which I liked the look of enough to think it worth it. The other ones I saw in a shop and bought.
It seems that things must have changed a fair amount in the three or four years since I last bought. I don't think that I could be bothered to play the games that others suggest you may have to indulge in.
