I'm after a regular Daytona and was shocked at the premium being asked on retail. Also quoted a 2 year waiting list!
To be fair, being quoted a two-year wait is actual reasonable. Most ADs will tell you there is no list, some won't even call it a 'list' for fear of setting the wrong precedent, some ADs refer to it as a 'show of intent/interest'.These waiting lists can of course be reduced subject to your relationship and buying power with your selected AD.
On another topic... I see the Rolex team have added a not unsubstantial c.8-9% to their prices for 2020...

A friend has informed me our local AD has a batman in the window at 13.5k. I think its poor form from an AD to be asking grey dealer prices.
I would be surprised if it's a new one. I would not think Rolex would allow it.rog007 said:

AD - Sorry we haven’t got any in. We’ve got a second hand one in the window though for 13.5 thousand pounds.
Customer - wtf

That’s funny though if an AD is selling second hand watches for more than they’re selling new ones.
And thats my point, ive had a conversation with said AD about grey market prices etc and they agree that its just not cricket etc... smacks of hypocrisy and im not sure id bother to try and purchase from them again.El stovey said:

I will confess to some confusion.
Is the whole idea about Rolexes to participate in an investment market or to have a watch? ( I have similar feelings about some car brands).
I do not own a Rolex, so obviously this bug did not bite. I completely understand it this is just an investment and not about watches at all.
I have some cars that have gone up and down with crazy swings, but since I do not sell them it is a spectator sport. Equally I have a few watches but could not imagine why I would sell.By "few" I mean four or five as I recall.
Is it just about money?

Like many things when you start off it can be just about the object but then other things come into play you never anticipated (price rises).
When I bought my GT3 nobody wanted them, 18 months old bought way below list. Just bought because I wanted a nice sports car. You now cannot ignore where prices have gone unless you are absolutely loaded, I still wouldn't sell, but nice to know It's not lost me money.
I bought a Rolex 2 yrs ago because I wanted a nice watch, just looked over all the different models in store picked the one I liked. I subsequently find out they are like hens teeth in the UK & with this huge grey market, Again nice to know but still not selling.

For some it will be just about a source of income , for others including me my interest in watches started years ago with a sub non date being my very strong desire and ultimately I purchased one which nearly twenty years later is still a daily wearer. Is the whole idea about Rolexes to participate in an investment market or to have a watch? About 18 years ago I spoke to a pal who’d flipped a Daytona and made £1500 relatively without risk , so I placed a deposit and a few years later took delivery with the intention of making a few bob , but I liked the watch I decided to keep it as an occasional wearer but also as money in the bank.
A second Daytona was sourced for my sons 21st but arrived too late so I have kept that unworn , that was14 years ago.
I’m now up to a collection of eight Rolex watches , two I wear on a regular basis , others remain unworn , this is amongst other brands.
I see the overall collection as something I like , I’m interested in , but also as a form of investment in the very long term sense.
My father , when I was very young used to buy krugerrand as an investment , he passed them on to his children over 40 years later for our benefit, I will suggest that’s what will happen with the majority of watch collections , the eventual profit will be realised and used not by the collector but by the beneficiaries.
Just my 2p worth.
