That’s funny though if an AD is selling second hand watches for more than they’re selling new ones.

Customer, - I’m interested in a Rolex gmt, the one with the blue and black bezel
AD - Sorry we haven’t got any in. We’ve got a second hand one in the window though for 13.5 thousand pounds.
Customer - wtf

This happens.
Certainly in Edinburgh.
That’s interesting, I’ve never seen Rolex watches myself like this in Edinburgh, I have seen nice second hand watches in the laings on George street (panerai and omega) etc and possibly in the shop on the corner of princess and Frederick (can’t remember which) but they’ve always been cheaper than new ones.

Is it just about money?
A few years ago - when you could actually buy a new SS Sports Rolex at a dealers, it was a smart choice (if you liked the watch) as after a few years it would have lost virtually no money, which is always an added bonus.

These days - who knows?

I certainly won't be selling any of mine in the foreseeable future. The Kermit & BLNR I sold a few years ago shot up in value over the next couple of years.

I think it is very much like the GT3 world, the steady residuals / profits have drawn in purple who are not interested in the brand but looking to make a profit, or those who like nice watches but were perhaps not a Rolex fan ‘trying’ them out safe in the knowledge their money is pretty safe.

I’ve had a few (not a collector, one or two is enough), and I’m happy if I can change without losing too much same as my cars really, do I need to change, no, do I want to change, yes!

I've been casually looking at second hand Rolex datejust watches in blue. They seem to be retailing for around £5500 with reputable dealers.
Whilst in the canary islands over Christmas i saw New examples of the same watch for 5000 euros which equates to about £4200.
What are the pitfalls of buying abroad if any?

In the canaries? Paying import duty on the way back into the U.K.!

I bought my DJ41 stainless oyster from a dealer in Spain for just a smidge over £4k landed.

However, Canary Islands sounds a bit dubious, only cause I remember them openly selling knock offs in Las Americas back in 1988. Haha

But if it was an Official Rolex dealer then why not?

My understanding is it was an official Rolex dealer. All high end gear.
What's stopping me from wearing it and putting the box in my suitcase?

Nothing, what's stopping customs from requesting to look in your case?

Why would it matter?

Surely if you buy a watch in Spain all duties and vat is paid. Well, for the next few months anyway. wink

The Canaries aren't Spain for the purposes of tax (amongst other things).

What the hell did you do in '88? Actually don't answer that, I was there in that year too.

Do you know if Goldsmiths operate a policy where you can only go on a SS list if you buy another watch off them?

I’ve been looking forward to having a chat about a few models for quite a while - but have been otherwise engaged. So today I made the trip to my nearest AD...

Anyway this trout in goldsmiths basically told me I’m wasting her time unless I’m going to buy an Omega, Breitling or Bremont off her! Whilst I appreciate the honesty - is this a company wide policy or just this store/woman?

Very much like Porsche and their RS products I know Ad’s like to “build a relationship” - something that I’d be willing to do. However If I have to buy another watch to do this I’m simply not interested in any of the watches they sell at the moment...

Just want to work out whether I’m wasting my time with Goldsmiths?

As I’ve posted elsewhere, my first purchase from an AD (Mappin and Webb), was a ceramic black face Daytona, just kept in regular contact and was happy to agree any paperwork could be kept.

Perhaps she marked you down as the sort of person to describe her as “a trout” hehe

Was bidding on a Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea 116660 2010 and stopped low. It ended up going for 6kGBP. That seems low for a good condition, box and papers private sale. I took a look at other completed sales and there are others that went at similar.
