Perhaps. Maybe more the case with the young - by the time you get to my (advanced) age you really couldnt care a **** what others think.

Perhaps also a case with the aspiring but not-so-rich. I once sailed with a farmer friend of Princess Anne, one of the "county set" if I can use that phrase and almost everything about him from his old Peugeot estate to his once well tailored suits were old and well used and more than a bit tatty. But very upper class. Would undoubtedly have seen a gold Rolex as bad taste.

Funny things people. Funny the way we sniff each other out, seperate public school from state school etc. I guess thats what you are saying but I dont think that something like a watch would be part of it.

All of which is perfectly fine, why is everyone getting upset, it's really strange.

i think the majority of people getting upset, are actually more upset about them not being in a position to make a quick buck flipping them to black market dealers and its less about not getting a watch they actually want to own.

I think the "display" watches are a good thing, its nice to actually see the bloody things, i've ordered a new Sub Date from WOS, who knows whether i'll get one or not, i bought a Sub (no date) in 2019 which i've worn everyday since, as i want it to wear it i'm not gonna get upset about it if it never arrives.

Love it! Were the tatty old things whispering to you? This is such a PH cliché, but it is so curiously satisfying to see it used in earnest. wink

Anyway, I thought you you suitably aged that you didn't care what other people thought? Just for the avoidance of doubt, I don't have a solid gold Rolex, but If someone wants one then good for them.

I find it very interesting that amongst watch brands only Rolex seems to create such strong emotions regarding perceived status and desirability, and how it reflects on the wearer.

In terms of scruffy old clothes, they certainly were. Mind you, you ought to have seen his old wooden boat. Mold and water everywhere inside, and an old Blakes loo that came away completely when a friend tried to use it.

I dont think that the make of watch reflects on the wearer at all for most people, though the bling of a solid gold ( or imitation gold of any make) does shout out "car dealer" or "publican". That said, I have been flipping through the watch makers web sites and the Rolex models do seem to me to be better designed visually. I quite fancy a YachtMaster 2 with the red and blue bits on the face, but I cant stomach the idea of £5k for the watch and £25k for the makers name on it..

By “curiously satisfying” do you mean f***ing hilarious??

Good to see some more ‘grounded’ posts on here of late, it was getting utterly painful…

“I’m selling my collection”

“Only bought by the Insta-crowd”

“I wouldn’t be seen in new ref”

One good thing about Rolex - the little magnifying glass in the lens. Designed for old farts like me who otherwise wouldnt know what the date is.

Yes, makes me cringe when people say they will sell their watch collection because somebody they've never heard of 'flexed' one on Instagram.

But that is the sad reality of the world around us……

One Case in point - AP double balance Skeleton …….rapper gives one to another rapper for his birthday….price jumps 20 percent within a week………if you were selling then…..great ….if you were a buyer ….not so great.

Really?

Rose or steel?

I have a steel and keep tabs on prices and have not noticed any 20% jump. I don't follow rose though

Rose . But even the steels have come on strong last few weeks .

What I was selling for 200-205, is now 235-240.

I'm always curious to know how these people are being so exposed to such content on social media... I personally don't get the Essex crowd popping up on my Insta feed, flexing their Rolex or not... and I follow a lot of watch content. Seems like you'd actively have to be seeking it out or following those people for it even be on your radar.

Unless of course, it's just an imaginary gripe... whistle

Good grief

Maybe we can arrange a stunt of a rapper doing similar with the steel, price doubles and I pay off my mortgage and semi retire. I'd be most grateful

Yup.
I don't do Instagram at all, have no interest in it. As a result I am oblivious to who is flexing what and where.
I do get plenty of mature watch content in my feeds and YT suggestions some of which is interesting to read, but no flexing involved.

Simple solution is if you don't like Insta nonsense don't subscribe to Insta, it works for me.

For the benefit of an oldie - what does "flex" mean in this context? Serious question - I have only just got used to gay not meaning happy.

How does it work? On INSTA you just publish a pic so everybody can see it, right?

I just bought a no date Sub without any hassle, no waiting list and no drama just a pleasant experience, I didn't know and cannot understand why someone would pay so much to but it through Watchfinder etc. It wasn't 'cheap' to begin with.

I have no plans to sell it I'm delighted and there are nice AD out there I guess you have to be lucky to find them.

Thats basically it but the whole world of Instagram is a massive thing for some people, social media influencers can make good money out of it and them wearing a rolex drives the demand for those who follow them who also want to be seen with a Rolex and the cycle goes on.

The people making money out of it are a tiny percentage of the user base but many many others are trying to chase the same status.

I dont buy into it myself, too old probably at 40 but for those in their teens and 20s it can be a big thing.
