Also edited to add I was/am a customer I didn't just walk in off the street. My point being that you can seemingly have a relationship with an AD that isn't predicated on spending fortunes on other things that aren't as desirable.

I'm not trying to have a go but in your original post you gave the impression that you walked in off the street and got the watch ie 'no wait list no drama'

All of which is perfectly fine, why is everyone getting upset, it's really strange.

i think the majority of people getting upset, are actually more upset about them not being in a position to make a quick buck flipping them to black market dealers and its less about not getting a watch they actually want to own.

I think the "display" watches are a good thing, its nice to actually see the bloody things, i've ordered a new Sub Date from WOS, who knows whether i'll get one or not, i bought a Sub (no date) in 2019 which i've worn everyday since, as i want it to wear it i'm not gonna get upset about it if it never arrives.
Indeed, you can have whatever you want instantly but you have to pay market price (grey) which of course means you're not making any £ paper gains which seems to be the thing that upsets everyone, it's all about making money rather than owning and enjoying the watch.

I recently bought a blue dialled Datejust II I paid around £8000 I checked the market and that's the price (A1 condition/box and papers and still in Rolex warranty) so I had two choices but I wanted the watch and had to accept that it was actually worth £6000 in the trade, having lost thousands buying and flipping omegas/panerai/cartiers I've finally got a watch that is perfect for me, I just wish I'd done it when they were 5k hehe

Good choice. I bought my navy(baton) fluted DJ2 new in 2016, £5200 after discount from an AD. IMO it's such a classic and underrated dial. I can't see myself ever selling.

Yes that's the badger, a 116334 with batons & blue sunburst dial, it's a fabulous thing.

I’m not sure that’s true (although it may be true for some). I imagine most people are just annoyed they can’t buy the watch they want at the price it “should” be…

The price it should be is set by the market, if these people you describe above were offered a watch and then
had to sell it on, would they price it according to the market? Yes of course they would.

Well, yes. I’m not saying the grey market is anything other than a reflection of the current supply / demand mix, but if the manufacturer believes a watch should be £6k, it’s obviously annoying if you can only get one quickly by paying £8k+. I’m lucky enough to have got my watch at ~20% off before all this craziness, so technically I’m ahead of the game. I’d have made money on a watch that would usually lose money if I sold it too, which is nice.

But - I bought it to own and wear, rather than as an investment, and I’d only have to find something to replace it with if I moved it on.

That said, the rose gold yacht master on a rubber strap is very nice. biggrin Sadly, above my budget.

There’s a broader question about why Rolex haven’t added a couple of thousand to the price of a sub, given that there’s apparently a market for it at that price.

Fair enough, perhaps I should have been clearer. I wasn't on a waiting list or hadn't expressed an interest but I am known to the AD and it was a random visit

I don't think thats fair to say but in the UK and not London
In what way would it be "unfair" and to whom?
Okay I phrased that incorrectly, I don't feel I need to say
Why did you feel to mention your little success at all then? Clickbait?
Gosh that's friendly, I was merely providing some balance to the 'argument' that is being propogated
Its a unsubstitanted claim not evidence
Oh I see , you want a picture? Okay you'll like this. I'm at my London house today driving to my country house later where the watch is. I shall take a pic with a piece of paper with your name on and post it if that makes you happy?
While nobody really asked for your personal real estate situation, yes, please do what you proposed.
Jes*s man what is your issue ?? He offered up a different perspective and is getting scalded for it. This place is like a schoolyard sometimes.
I think this ‘conversation’ pretty much explains why I have no interest in owning. Rolex.

When I worked offshore in the diving industry, the majority of the more elderly divers and dive crew all wore a Rolex, mind you they were not all priced at silly money, my Sea Dweller was £200 in the 70’s

It’s interesting how much they’ve managed to take them up in price. I bought my first Rolex in 2003. It was a used submariner date and I paid $2,400 for it, which seems about right.

Hi Oileak, I was about to go to the trouble of doing this but then I though I would have a quick look at the threads you have started, merely to see if there even the slightest possibility of a 'win' for me.

It seems there isn't so you will just have to take my word for it.

PS I drove back to my country house in my Rolls Royce (true) which was a bit dicey as it only does 10 miles to the gallon and we didn't have a full tank.
