Out of interest I’ll copy this post that I put in the White Gold Daytona Thread.

Was browsing in a Rolex dealer in the Caribbean yesterday and was offered $20k for my 5 year old white faced Steel Daytona despite the fact I didn’t have the box or papers with me. He said he had buyers lined up to get one. I refused of course as I waited a long time to get one and I’ll probably never be able to get another new one at list. Oh, and he had nothing in stock I would have considered buying as a replacement, surprise, surprise.

In the market for a Rolex datejust. Seen one with no paperwork & box and priced accordingly. Worth a pint of should i spend more and get one with bells and whistles?
My concern is the more I spend the less i will wear it..

Spend what you can afford and wear it. That’s my approach anyway.

Yep, and bear in mind though that if you think you may ever sell it, it's far easier with the paperwork. I sold a 14060M without the papers a few years ago and it was a headache.

How much cheaper?

How old is it?

You can also factor in that if it is 6 or so years old, you may easily save the price of a service, so just get it serviced before selling it and you will have new paperwork and a guarantee.

About £1k cheaper than an equivalent one with papers & box. 1970 model.

For £1k less on a 50 year old watch I'd say go for it.

It must be quite cheap as Datejusts of that era don't tend to go for huge amounts. Sounds like good value.

What's the going rate for Datejusts from early 70's?

Depends on the watch I guess.

But I sold a 2001 16200, which is a 36mm steel with plain bezel and jubilee with box an older service card and valuation for insurance last year, in lovely condition. White face with Arabic numerals for £2600.

The 70s stuff, so 16000, were about £1500-2100 for similar.

They are 34mm, the 36mm is pretty small, I like it though, but the 34mm is tiny by todays standards.

I think 1970s DJs are just a bit too removed from the current models to be desirable, so the prices tend to be lower. Smaller cases are just not in fashion. But if you like it, I wouldn't worry too much.

Didn't we discover that sought after models were coming to market (for example via TZ) at more sensible prices? Please correct me if I have made that up.
Did “we”??? Which models? The only thing I’ve noticed is an influx of BLNRs since the Oyster bracelet version was discintinued and people thought they could cash in!

And what constitutes sensible? £14k for a Hulk instead of £15k??!

The “usual suspects” are harder to get hold of than ever before, that isn’t going to bring prices down, IF they have reduced in the last 3-4 months it’s by a pathetic amount, even black dial Explorer 2s get a premium now!

I’m sure a Hulk went on TZ recently for just over £11k.

11k is definitely at the lower end of the scale according to the above link anyway.

Very good comment. I nearly went bankrupt trying to short Tesla shares.

Prices STILL holding despite Hong Kong riots, coronavirus and subsequent global market decline.

According to prices on chrono24 anyway.

Despite baselworld being postponed apparently Rolex are still going to announce the new models or reduction in some models when baselworld was due to be held. (End April)

Gold has shot up, why wouldn’t other commodities?

You could see that Coronavirus actually increases prices.

Brent/WTI, API4, EUA have all tanked in the past days - commodities is a wide word

Rolex prices also dropped during the global financial crisis and then the current high second hand prices didn’t exist to the same extent.

I thought there might be a drop again with more people wanting to sell and buyers waiting for a bit till it all settles down.
