The video is a load of rubbish and I think B&J has lost a lot of credibility from it, he's never really been one for clickbait but it's clearly worked on some of you.

One comment on the video summed it up, something along the lines of 'the bubble has burst the moment I walk into an AD and get a Pepsi GMT at list' which I think for the most part is true.

I have the full swathe of 'desirable' pieces currently and I'll not be liquidating them anytime soon, hype or not.

Someone who is paid to be seen wearing a Rolex. It usually applies to sports and movie stars.
Ok, now I'm more interested in who Autonomy's new BFF is than whether he can get me a white face daytona
And so a grey market is born....

Deeply unlikely.

So how is that different to any other commodity in the known world? Some people will always get preferential treatment.
I understand that. My point is, I am able to get a highly sought after Rolex now, which i can then sell at a premium, because there is a waiting list, because these VIPs are giving them out to people like me. It makes the whole waiting list things seem a bit silly. Its artificial.

Possible scenarios;

A/ Your "VIP" can get any hard to find watch he wants and does and gives them out to people. The manufacturer only has the capacity to build a certain amount of watches therefore you "VIP" is increasing the waiting lists.

B/ Your "VIP" can get a certain amount of hard to find watches in a certain period as the manufacturer only has the capacity to build a certain amount of watches therefore you "VIP" is increasing the waiting lists.

C/ You're making it all up and there is no "VIP" to try and antagonise people as the manufacturer only has the capacity to build a certain amount of watches leading to waiting lists.

If Roger Federer wants a ceramic Daytona, I suspect there isn't a waiting list for him. This doesn't mean the waiting lists and lack of supplies is false.

If you suggest it is, then Rolex will be bankrupt soon as they could be selling a heck of a lot of watches to people instead of giving the out for free to "VIP"s.

The waiting list does not exist.

The waiting list does exist for a lot of people. Knowing extremely well, an ex AD and now grey dealer I’m well aware of how the situation is. If someone is telling fibs about lists, they’re going to awfully long lengths by actually making one up to show people where they are on it.

In the U.K. there are not enough sports models being sold to end users at list to meet demand. Thus, should you want one you have to go on a list. And wait.

There are many ways to jump it of course.

I wrote a long post on this very forum a year or so ago about how it all works but I can’t be arsed to look for it or to explain it again.

Yup, but it still doesn't exist .

They will tell you all sorts, show you what they want you to see, but there is no list. They sell to known spending customers and to people who can make an impression when they chat with the sales folk.
They have been told who they can and cannot sell to (AD told not to sell to chinese !)

But no list. It's a pacifier.

You're being pedantic.

There may be no "list" but sports models aren't readily available.

Unless you're in the fortunate position of being bezzies with a brand ambassador.

Sadly, I think this is actually about relationships, rather than lists. It's very much like the Porsche scene.

Having been told by one mid sized jeweler that there was no access to a list for a 5164a until I'd established a relationship, I asked about a white dial Skydweller to be told 2 years. The salesman then asked if I'd like to be told what I could buy now.

If I was running the shop, who's to say I'd act differently? The question is how to eek out as many sales as you can from all customers. Is it best to dangle the fluffy dice of hope in front of new people, to get them to try to build a relationship (ie buy other stuff first), or should they spread the love round to build a broader base?

The established model seems to be to get new people to buy the low end stuff and earn the right to be selected to buy the stuff they want.

Or, you know, become an ambassador!

Must add... I told him a two year wait wasn't a problem, and to let me know when they've got one for me. Let's see if, having failed to bite on stuff I don't want, they find me something I do.

Since 2017;

Batman
SD50
Daytona
Hulk
DSSD-DB
EX2
2 others I’ve been offered but didn’t take up on, Pepsi I’ve still not been offered.

So what does that make me? None were available when I asked for them, so I “waited”. I know I was on some sort of list as when I collected one I was shown the list of another so I should be prepared to have the funds ready “in the next few months”.

Or is it my AD are simply just doing things well and trying to keep everyone happy?

The Pepsi is an interesting one-I was as far as I was aware the person who opened the list as I “knew” it was coming before it was released. But I’ve yet to have one. Are they giving them to more important customers who buy precious metal watches? More than likely.

I don’t feel hard done by by any means. But I am still “waiting”.

That makes you a huge spender and one of the people that make other people wait on a "list" obviously.

Anyone who buys as many Rolex watches can expect to be catered for while the rest do without.

You are not the average customer.

Fanboi thread.

Nobody cares about a Rolex on your wrist. The whole market is hype and spin. I sold my SS sports years ago.

Oh please let me buy a brand new watch from an AD and get treated like $hit for the privilege.

If you can make money then fine but it’s a ponzi pyramid and you’re being played like a fiddle.
