"Good" new watch - budget up to £1k
Discussion
I considered the Longines for my sons (x 2) 18ths but decided I wanted a more ‘premium’ brand/watch - hence the speedmaster reduced and the black bay. I also decided not to ask them what they wanted. They already liked my watches plus they might have chosen something fashionable rather than a classic. I wanted them to have a watch that would probably stand the test of time (appearance and value).

I’ll suggest something a bit different :
Garmin have recently launched a series of ‘Marq’ watches - which are really well made high end GPS sports watches.
There are ones which specialise in sailing / driving / exploring / running etc
The list is around $2k ish - so not much above 1k GBP.
That's akin to spending £1300 on a smart phone. In two years the battery will be shagged (which you won't able to replace) and it'll no longer be supported, right? Garmin have recently launched a series of ‘Marq’ watches - which are really well made high end GPS sports watches.

A Longines will still be working in 100 years if you treat it right!
The point is though .. they however attractive a traditional long lasting manual / automatic watch like Longines or whatever is .... if the 18 year old has no interest at all in those type of watches it is a bit of a wasted present.
Get the type of watch (or whatever else ) the 18 yr old wants
Bit over budget but I really like the look of these. https://eu.yema.com/products/yema-speedgraf-yspee2...
Decent power reserve and Seiko movement.

Yema are doing amazing Heritage watches at the moment, but they're an acquired taste. The brand is perfect for the watch geeks, but I wouldn't go there for a gift. Decent power reserve and Seiko movement.
Their watches manage to look and feel vintage, with modern capabilities. That's great if you want that set of attributes, but still pretty niche.
When people ask me what to get for x amount, the answer to the "wear it all the time, under a grand" is normally a 1521.
I'm not sure if go second hand as a gift, but if I was, then this is what they'd be getting...

Omega Seamaster
For 1k!?My other option other than the Hydroconquest I ordered was a Bell & Ross but a bit of budget creep needed with these...& I still prefer the Longines
I think a Seamaster 300 41mm on the five link bracelet is a great shout. These often change hands with box/papers for 1.1 ish.

Omega generally don't hold money from new, and the seamaster has been going half a century. Plenty around from a few hundred quid upwards.

Maybe a quartz with no papers, but they have gone up a lot in the last 12 months. I think a Seamaster 300 41mm on the five link bracelet is a great shout. These often change hands with box/papers for 1.1 ish.
I sold my 2531.80 with box and warranty card for £1500 a few months back and it sold pretty quickly at that price.
I fancy another and they seem to be a fair more than that for a decent condition one now.
2254.50's seem to be fetching even more.
